[Feb Press Association.] WELLINGTON, May 14. The Wellington Bowing Club has passed a resolution to the effect that the time has r ot yet arrived for the institution of eightoared interprovinoial contests, as they would be inimical to club interests.
UNION BOWING CLUB. A meeting of the committee of thia club was held at the boathouse on Monday evening; present—-Messrs P. D. Ksstavcn (ia the chair), A. Allan, G. H. Cooper, A. E. Craddock, F. E. Hyman, D, Leo and G. H. Mason. A lengthy circular was received from the New Zealand Bowing Association, relative to instituting mtarprovinci&l eight-oared races in New Zealand. The meeting was strongly o! opinion that the proposal was premature and unworkable, and was at present beyond tho club’s financial capability. A reply to that effect was ordered to be sent. Messrs Atack, Ksstevca and Craddock were ap» 2 bed a commi ttse to revise the rules and f iit a report to a future meeting. The treasurer reported a credit balance-;o£ £77 4s, and that there was only one member who was in arrears with hia subscription. The date of the fancy dress ball w&a fixed for Monday, July 8. After a large amount of minor business had -bean disposed of, the meeting closed. CANTERBURY BOWING CLUB;/ : There was a large attendance of members at the Canterbury Rowing Club’s annual smoko conceit nad presentation of prizes at the boathouse last evening. Mr B. D. Thomas (vice-president) occupied tho chair, and presented the prizes won during the year. Tho winners were as follow-Maiden Fours, Christchurch Regatta—-Messrs F. I. Cowlishaw, B. A. Robinson, G. W. Humphreys and E. P. Nicoll,- President’s Cnp—Messrs F. B. Daveaus, N. L. Macbeth, C. S. Hawkos and W. E. Styche; Club Fours—Messrs L. W. Appleby, E. F. Nicoll, H. Frost and P. Poulton; Scratch Fours (dead heat)— Messrs F. I. Cowlishaw, E. ’P. Nicoll, H. Frost and T. Cowlishaw and Messrs P. W, Hobbs, F. W. Dunnage, C. S. Hawkea and L. J. Hobba; Club Pairs, Messrs C. Hewer and J. Lawrence; Club Double Sculls, Messrs C. S. Hawkes and W. J. Smith; Trial Pairs, Messrs B. A. Robinson and T. Cowlishaw; coxswain’s prizes, steering H. Harper, conduct B. C. Taylor, attendance Archie Mitchell, Albert Mitchell and A. Thomson. Among the toasts honoured were:—“Kindred Bowing Clubs,” proposed by Mr A. F. N. Blakiston and replied to by Messrs P. D. Keatevfcu (Union) and H. Bowlker (Avon); “The Prize-winners,” proposed by Mr J. B. Evans and acknowledged by Messrs P. I. Cowlishaw and L. W. Appleby. The Chairman,in proposing tho toast 'of “ Tho Captain of the Club,” stated that Mr Nicoll would leave for Ashburton in a few days, and the club would lose « hard-working and valuable officer. Mr Nicoll, daring tho time he had bean connected with the club, had wen the respect and esteem of his club-mates and, on their behalf, he (the Chairman) had much pleasure in presenting Mr Nicoll with an. oak inkstand mounted in silver, ss a token of the members’ appreciation of his services. Mr Nicoll’s health was drunk with musical honours, and that gentleman suitably, responded. The Chairman stated that a group-photograph of the officers of the club and an address would be presented to Mr Nicoll iaa-fewdayo. The evening was enlivened with some capital songs, recitations and 'instrumental items. n-.ltSx H. Fleming-played the accompaniments.
