THE AUSTRALIAN TWO-YEAR-OLDS.

The ! Sydney Referee in, an article on taexfe year’s Barbies saysßefore the autumn racing at Band wick either Wallace! or Challenger seemed to stand out as a likely Derby winner, but the Eandwick running has severely discounted the form; of Mr W. E. Wilson’s Victorian champion b. Possibly one or other may yet win a Derby, but their running in Sydney does not allow them to leave off with unsullied,! records. Of the two, Wallace’s form waa decidedly in front of Challenger’s, but both| Sob Eay and Georgia decisively set' Wallace down. The Australian Jockey 1 ] Club’s Derby will bo run before the Victorian Derby, and possibly as muchj interest will be taken in the Eandwick; event as in the Flemington blue ribbon; contest. A considerable number of yearlings were nominated for both, and the A.J.C. Darby running in September will! therefore afford a good line for the olaano; race over the border, to bo decided in the' beginning of November. It will than bej rather late to select doubles for Derby and; Cup, which so many folks delight to indulge themselves with, and therefore an earlier, consideration of affairs as regards three-, year-old prospects ia deemed necessary.! The moot prominent of those engaged in' the A.J.G. Derby on performances are Bluej Cap, Mantuicher, Creme d’Or, Coolaita; Vivian, Bob Eay, Waterfall, Loch Leigh* True Bine, and Freda, but such as Gale,! Bean Scant, Sir Gaorgo, and Eiflo have' shown pace in public, Thoq there aroother eligiblca in Surge, the big Gibraltar colt,! who may train on into a good three-year-: old t Prince Cheater, the immense colt byj Chester from Cranbrook’a dam, now in; training at Kirkham; Fearnought, a good-! looking relative of Dreadnought’s, trained' at the same place, whilst Mr S. Hordern,! has several with fair prospects of developing into useful gallopers. The Temps gelding Toreador ought to turn out alright? if he stands training, and Frailty’s colt,* Astronomer, belongs to a family that race.: He has a likely-looking appearance.. MrJ Dan, O’Brien has Ilcheater, a. brother to' Xalanthus, also a. fine colt, that .the qnestionj has not yet been put to severely. Fort looks like making a Derby colt, and oh 1 breeding is well qualified, whilst Mr HJ C. White has also Form engaged.. The latter did nothing particular at the late meeting, but was not in’ any way disgraced, and his owner has another Cranbrook colt related _to Autonomy in the list. Wollomumbi ia a good representative of Splendor, and per-, haps St David, Mr W. T. Jones’ Carlyon colt, or Carbiae’a representative. Cartridge, now in the possession of Mr D.‘ O’Brien, may develop the necessary pace; later on. Gsorgio is not in the Derby,; and, therefore, late form leaves Bob Eay! with a distinct lead. The Welcome Jack gelding is not very massive, but is big enough. Ho has perfect action, an ! advantage which should enable him to' stay, although his finish in the Champagne Stakes, when Wallace waa rapidly over- 1 hauling him, seemed to indicate he could! not stand a pinch. That may be so, but Itj will need something very much out of th<s common to pinoh Bob Eay, whose paced*! remarkable, and he is not so cranky as the fillioa by bis Eire generally ate. At present* therefore, Mr O’Brien’s gelding look* worth following. Vivian, Blue Cap, ' or l , Creme d’Or may be found worthy opponeats and it may be that one of Mr Maokellar’s nominations from Kirkham,; or Toreador, Fort, True Blue, or Woollo* muxhbi, will develop into prominent candidates when Derby Day at Eandwick! looms closer to us. The St Albums candidates in the Victoria Easing' Club's Derby include Wallace, Challenger, Eed Courts aud Trentham (the two latter by Trenton),! Onward, Thunderer, and several promising! colts and fillies owned in South Australia nnd Victoria, besides a strong nomination, 1 ! from Now South Wales owners, including! most of those above referred to, lb :,S(. doubtful if a better than Wallace is nominated to represent Victoria, afid Thunderer has good prospects on behsfif of South Australis, but the solution of tha Sydney Derby may serve ■to correctly indicate the Flemington result .later on«j Developments between now and Septe.pba*s or November may ua. iS sn a new lighti' '
