DEATH UNDER CHLOROFORM.
It was reported in Wednesday’s papers that a girl had died at the Christchurch Hospital on the previous day while under the influence of chloroform, and that the police and the coroner had thought it unnecessary to hold an inquest. Now this shows the unbounded confidence of tha authorities in the staff of the hospital; but it does not satisfy the public that a child should be allowed to die without any inquiry being made into the cause of her death. In this case there is no suggestion that anyone was to blame for the catastrophe ; the anaesthetic was, no doubt, properly administered, and the operation was, we are sure, skilfully performed ; but it would bo reassuring to tho friends of patients at the hospital to know that any accident would bo followed by an independent inquiry. This is, wa believe, the invariable practice in England, and we can see no reason why it should not be followed here.
