The weather was fine for the third day of the Victorian Racing Club's Autumn Meeting, a light breeze tempering the ■an'« rays. There was a very large attendance, including the Governor and the member* of the English and Australian cricket teams. . The Messrs Miller sustained the reputation of the Mill Park establishment for jumping events by annexing the Second Hurdle Race with Onyen, by Boolka from Eira. Phyllis, by Trantonfrom Yardly, was installed favourite for the Nursery Handicap, but was left at the posti A desperate finish was fought between the placed horses, Trentina being disappointed in attempting to get through. Bessie M'Carthy, with 9st 31b, was made a rum favourite for the Autumn Handicap, bat was never, dangerous, finishing sixth behind Donation. The last six furlongs were inn in Imin 1 84200. The Harvester displayed Mb true form in the Champion Stakes. Stevenson rode a nice race, and never attempted to force the pace until well into the straight. Owing to the time limit of Smin 45aec being exceeded by half a second, the first prize was reduced to 350 sovs, the second to 100 sovs and the third to 50 sovs. The Free Handicap made Stevenson's fourth win in succession. When the word was given Carnage jumped away in front, but passing the stand the first time The Harvester was leading, followed by Preston, Maroon, Carnage and Patron in the order named, the pace being very slow. Aa they swept along the river straight Carnage raced to the front and improved the pace, heading The Harvester by six lengths, which he increased to a dozen by the time the abattoirs were passed. Here Patron ran into third place behind The Harvester. Entering the straight for the first time Patron and The Harvester came on together five lengths behind Carnage, whilst Preston was whipping-in. This order was maintained past the stand and along by the river, but by the abattoirs Carnage’s lead had been decreased to two lengths from The Harvester, who held a, similar advantage over Patron, Preston being still in the rear. The' weather for the-opening day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting was all that could bo desired, and the attendance was largo. The fields on the whole can only bo classed aa moderate, those for the Hack Hurdle Race and Ladies’ Bracelet being very poor, each having only two starters. Some of the finishes were exciting, and the sport on the whole was interesting. Crawford’s starting machine was used successfully in some events. Passing the stand Strophon still led, but a quarter of a mile further on he began to tire, and collapsing when nearing the trees, he took no further part in the" race. The last hurdle was taken by Revolt about half a length in front of Auroa wifch Bonovoree close up, and an interesting finish ended in Revolt winning by a clear length, while barely half a length separated the second and third horses. Lady Zetland was first away, but Monte Carlo immediately took command, with Lady Zetland at his girths. Ban Godfrey third and Eangipuhi and Dreamland close up. Passing the stand Monte Carlo still led, followed closely by Lady Zetland, Dreamland and Ben Godfrey, while Rangipuhi had dropped back last. At the three-quarter-mile post Dreamland went up to Monte Carlo, and when a mile and a quarter had been covered she was in front, the pair having placed a large gap between themselves and the other three. Before the quarter-mile post was reached Dreamland had shot her bolt, and Eangipuhi joined the leaders. Once in the straight Eangipuhi gob hia head in front, but it was only momentarily, for inside the distance-post the pair were locked together, and the verdict was in doubt until the winning-post was reached, when Lady Zetland drow out and won by a bead, with Monte Carlo four lengths away, third.
