THE HARVEST.
Since Sunday the weather in the Ashbarton district has been very fine, and good progress has been made with harvest work, A good deal of damage has, however, been done to the corn by the moisture and heat, much being discoloured and some sprouted. Oats are threshing-out well, hut wheat is a very disappointing crop—much straw but little grain—and growers are very despondent. • The harvest operations in South Canterbury, with which good progress was made last week, received a check on Saturday. A good deal of rain fell on that day and on Sunday, and Monday was damp and warm. Monday night brought a welcome change in a drying breeze, and yesterday was clear and hot. It would have been better if the heat had been accompanied by a breeze. Most of the grain has been cut, but only a small proportion baa been stacked, and owing to repeated wettings the stocked stuff has, in many instances, been badly spoiled, both wheat and oats being sprouted.
