LINWOOD FOOTBALL CLUB.
ANNUAL PICNIC. On Saturday this club held its fOttUhl picnic and sports at Bligh’s Gardens, £Qswl Brighton. About fifty members assembled in the square at two o’clock, and leffc by a special tram for New Brighton. A few showers fell daring the early part of the afternoon, hut towards four o’clbek the sun shone, and the various games and sports were carried out. A cricket match, between teams selected by Messrs 8. Orchard and J. M’Farlane resulted in a win for Orchard’s team by 27 runs, the scores being j—Orchard’s team 41, M’Far> lane’s team 14. The greatest interest centred in the tug-of-war between teami from the New Brighton Sailing Club and Lin wood Football Club. There were twenty men on each side, the Sailing Club’s team being perhaps a stone heavier all round than their opponents. The. first pall* which lasted two and a half minutes, wag won by the footballers, who also won the final after a stubborn contest lasting font minutes. At six o’clock the party safe down to an excellent dinner, provided by Mr Prince in'a large marquee erected on the ground. Afterwards songs weregivea by Messrs J. Cusack, H. G. Stringer* A. Thomas, A. Walker, F. Plnafcet, and others. Mr A. Walker played the accompaniments and tho music for the dances. At ten o’clock the members returned to town, after spending a very enjoyable day. The. following are results of the sports 100yds Open Handicap— S. Orchard 7yds, 1; E. G. Benjamin 6yds* 2; J; M’Farlane Byds, 8. About fifteen started. Orchard won easily by two yards, half that distance between second' and third. 100yds Amateur Handicap—E. At East 3yds, 1; A. S. Andrews 2yd5,.2 j A. Sherratt 6yds, 8. East got much the best of the start, and won by three yards; Andrews beat Sherratt on the tape for second place. 100yds Junior Handicap— T. Bastion 6yds, 1; F. O’Brien Iyd, 2; T< Moses Iyd, 3. A very good race, won on the tape. 250yds Handicap—S. Orchard 9yds, I; G. Mnssen 12yds, 2; W. H. Carl 6yds, 8. About twenty started. Orchard headed his field twefity yards from the tape and won by two yards, Carl close up. lOOydfs Swimming Eaoe—A. Hobbs 12sec, 1; A. Duncan sor, 2; G. Mnssen lOsec, 8. Fifteen started. Hobbs won easily by three or four yards, two yards between second and third.
