CANTERBURY STEVEDORING ASSOCIATION.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, The Canterbury Stevedoring Association evidently do * not believe in hiding their light under a bushel. A donation of £25 is to be given to the workers, and I have a suggestion to make to the recipients of that sum, viz., to buy a few whips and present them to the officers to enable them to scourge us a little more, and to increase the profits of the above Association so they may be able to pay the workers a dividend, and keep one of the many promises made to us, the worst paid men of our calling in New Zealand. As to the chairman’s statement regarding the majority of the men being satisfied, how can it be otherwise when there was nobody present at the meeting who was able to prove it or disprove it ? But the public must take it with a grain of salt. I challenge the statement that the workers’ portion of the committee is said to have made—that the majority of our members are in favour of the present system of employing labour in port. It is absolutely untrue, and if the directors of the Canterbury Stevedoring Association are in earnest, as they would lead the public to think, they would call a .special meeting of the wharf labourers and, test the feeling of the men themselves. —I am, &e., WHARF LABOURER.
