YESTERDAY'S MARKET. The weather was fine and the influx of ( country visitors to the Grand • National Meeting caused a very large attendance at the market to-day. The entry of fat stock in all its departments was heavy, and business active. Stoes Sheep.-— About 3000 were yarded, the majority being cross-bred hoggets.and ewes in lamb, and some merino wethers. An active demand existed for any good sorts of ewes in lamb. Messrs Todhuntbb and Jennings sold for clients 229 twotooth ewes at 11s, 41 ewes at 10a 9d, 25 cull ewes at 7s Bd, 76 ewes at 10s fid, 144 hoggets at 11s Bd, 287 cross-bred ewes in lamb at da Id, 226 ewes In lamb at 11s lOd, 90 do at 10s, 176 merino wethers at 7a, 178 cross-bred ewes in lamb at 11s Sd, Messrs Pyne and Go. sold 863 three-quarter-bred hoggets at 13s 6d, 151 at 13s, 81 at 10a 10d, 40 at 10s 6d, 46 ewes and lambs at Us 9d, 183 cross-bred wethers and maiden ewes at 14s Bd. Pat Cattle.— Of the 237 head yarded, there were some as prime cattle as could be wished ; but the. demand did not suit the sellers'-ideas of value; as a number were withdrawn, andsoma private sales were effected subsequently.* The best ox and heifer beef realised about <£l per 1001 b, but the sale of inferior quality beef was very limited in extent, and prices ranged fromlss per 1001 b. Store Cattle.— Only 90 head of store cattle were yarded, the majority of these being odd lots of dry cows, for which the demand was very limited. Eighteen dairy cows did not oiler much, selection, and only a few changed hands. Pigs. —Nearly 400 pigs were yarded, and there was a considerable falling off in values owing to lack of competition by buyers, who were very scarce. Nothing but the primest corn-fed porkers and baconers realised the prices that have been given for this class lately, and the majority was disposed of at a considerable redaction on late values. There was a good sale for stores and weaners, this class being in demand just now for consuming the otherwise useless potatoes. Messrs H. Matson and Co. (associated with the National M. and A.
