The imports during the last month show a decrease of a quarter of a million, and the exports £2,380,000. The American authorities consider it possible that the harvest estimates will have to be modified. The maximum supply for export will not be more tbaa fifty million quarters, while the minimum required is forty-eight millions. .LONDON, August 10. The Daily News says the American surplus is even now saving Europe from a bread famine. BANK OF VAN DIEMEN’S LAND. HOBART, August 10. The investigation of the affairs of the Bank of Van Diemen’s Land strengthens the conviction, expressed by the shareholders, that there was no actual necessity to close the doors of the Bank. The Parliament will discuss to-morrow tho offer of tho Government to guarantee the notes and otherwise assist the Bank, The result of the suspension is already being felt; as many firms are reducing their staffs. Mr Gilbert Anderson, late of the firm of Edwards, Bennett and Co., has been appointed business manager of the Islington Freezing Company.
