DUNEDIN, August S. The fifth annual match between the Canterbury College and Otago University football teams was played to-day on the Carisbrock ground before a good attendance. Tho game was started by Montgomery kicking-off from the pavilion end, with a stiff wind at his back. The ball was kept in the Reds’ territory for a short tima rnltil the forwards, by good play, took it to the other end. A oapital kick by Mendclsou relieved tho pressure. Cxesswell got possession and made a short run, but passed back to Craddock when ho might easily have got over the line. The pass was not well judged, and the Blues, by smart play, soon had their lines cleared. After some uninteresting play, Craddock secured the ball, and after a dodgy run, succeeded in crossing his opponents’ line. The kick by J. Marshall was not successful. Score —College one point. University nil. When the ball was once more set in motion, play was for the most part in the Blues’ ground. Several penalty kicks were awarded tho oppressed, who, however, failed to gain much uround by them. A capital run by Meudelson evoked hearty cheers, but tho Reds very' soon had the oval back in their opponents’ territory. Near the centre flag Balche picked up the ball, and passing one after aaother of the University men, scored behind the goal-posts. The kick by Marshall was again a failure. Score, College two points. University nil. The ’Varsity boys were evidently spurred on by these reverses, and Crawford and Hislop both showed up by rendering serviceable work for their side. By hard play, however, the College changed the scene of operations, and, the backs getting the ball, they indulged in some very pretty passing, which resulted in Balch again crossing the line. Marshall’s kick on this occasion was successful. ScoreCollege five points. University nil. A fine kick by Ahern resulted in the Reds’ line being threatened, and a couple of scrums were formed in close proximity to the goal posts, bub no score was made; and the visitors wore very soon again playing in neutral ground. Tho Blues again charged into the Reds’ quarters, and after some fast play, Meudelson got the leather sad dropped a neat goal. Score—College five points. University three points. No further score was made before half-time. Within five minutes after the second spell had started, Ahern made a brilliant run and succeeded in getting over the line at the North-west comer. The kick by Montgomery, though a good effort, was not successful. Score—College five points. University four points. A - few minutes after tho Reds ware forced down. The Blues’ lino was pressed hard, and the Reds were then again forced. So far tho University players had had the best of the spell, notwithstanding that they had the sun in their eyes and that the wind was against them. Give and take play followed, neither side having much of an advantage, until ten minutes before time, when the Bines were very near scoring, a force down only resulting.
