FIRES.
[Feb Feess Association.] INVERCARGILL, Sept. 19. A house in Commercial lane, near the jetty, was partially destroyed by fire from a defective chimney at noon to-day. The house belonged to Angus M'Lean, and is insured for .£IOO in the Standard. The furniture of the tenant, Mrs Petrie, is insured for .£6O in the New Zealand office. She lost about £SO worth of bedding and clothing. The water pressure in the mains from the pumping engines proved most effective.
