THE OPPOSITION.

CONSOLIDATION OF THE PARTY. [Bt Telegraph. J [FEOM OTJII SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, August 3. A caucus of the old Opposition party-was held at two o’clock this afternoon. It was, well attended, and a spirit of cordiality, prevailed. The opinion generally expressed was that the Budget having been now disposed or, it was high time that the party should bo organised, and that the go-as-you-please tactics of the last two months should definitely be abandoned. Mr Walker explained that he had moved his resolution purposely without consulting his friends, and gave hia reasons. Several of those who had walked out pointed out that their election pledges had given them no choice in the matter. They were perfectly willing to vote for a direct vote of No-confidence should tho party ever decide upon moving one. A resolution was then put and carried, that those present constitute themselves into a jjsrty, prepared to stand or fall together, and discharge the legitimate duties and functions of an Opposition It was also decided to elect a Committee of Management. Tho meeting then adjourned until Tuesday, when further steps will be taken in the way of organisation. I may add that very great disgust is expressed at the conduct of several members, who, while refusing to follow Mr Fish’s example and openly go over to the Government, have been steadily supporting Iho Premier, and constantly taking opportunity to attack those whom they call their friends in the House. The feeling among the Opposition is very strong that the time has come to slop this, and insist on these gentlemen taking either one sidebrthe other.
