AVON. " N This Board held its ordinary meeting on Monday, Jan. 30; present—Messrs Hake (Chairman), King, Swann, and Tutton.— Mr Rowe wrote for leave of absence, which was granted.—Mr C. Hawker applied for a lease of a reserve at New Brighton.-—The Clerk to reply that the Board did not feel justified in letting the reserve.—Messrs Buddie, Clark and others, residents of Scotstown. interviewed the Board, asking on what terms the Board would take over Tomes street, and having been informed of the usual conditions, the Surveyor was instructed to forward an estimate of costs of making the street.—The Surveyor’s report was read and considered.—Resolved, —“That the culvert under the Papanui road near Bligh’s road be renewed with a concrete one; that the Surveyor see Mr Barker re delivery of sand on Barker’s road; that notice be given to person* depositing rubbish on the roadside near Dudley Creek, Shirley; that tenders be invited for a supply of shingle for the various roads in the district, returnable for the next meeting; that the attention of the Selwyn County Council be/called to the increase of traction engine traffic on the North road and the damage caused by same, pointing out that as all culverts and bridges have been constructed fw ordinary dray traffic, that the traction engine traffic means a considerable outlay for reconstruction and repairs, and asking the Council to provide for some tax <>r charge to provide for same.”—Ccrrcsp uk 1 - ence was read:—From Mr I’arrow, it-sign-ing the position of ranger. Resolved—- “ That the same be accepted, and that applications be invited to fill the position .” —From Mr Webb, re stray stock on R idcliff road. The matter was ordered to 1-e attended to.—From Mr Nioholls, re cost of making road at Belfast. The Cleik to reply that the same would be taken into consideration after the March meeting.— From Mr J. Y. Zouch, asking that his name may be altered on the rate-roll. Instructions for same were given.—From tbe Christchurch City Council, informing th« Board that the fire-engines belonging to the city will not, after April 9 next, go outside the belts for any purpose. Letter received.—From the Christchurch D. strict Drainage Board In reply, re flooded state of Papanui road in wet weather, stating that there were no funds at the Board’s disposal to provide a larger conduit than the one already laid, and the only alternative would be to re-open the ditch, should the Board insist on greater f acilities for the escape of flood-water. The Surveyor stated that he had arranged to inspect, the same with the Engineer to the Drainage Board. From the same, stating that the Board were willing to contribute the sum of £25, to be paid annually for three years, towards the coat of clearing the river Styx. Accepted.— From the Selwyn County Council, m reply, stating that the Council had voted the usual grant of £4O for clearing the Styx, and decided that jf the Board finds it advisable to let a contract for three years, the Council would raise no objection. Let’er received. From the Colonial Treasurer, notifying that it was the intention of the Government to cease making payment -as rates, under the Crown and Native Lands Rating Acts, 1882, after the year ending March 31, 1888. This matter will a ect the Board’s revenue to the ameunt of nine pence per annum.—Tenders were opened for clearing the river Styx, when that of Josiah Whitworth was accepted, the term being for three years. — The Registrar t.f Dogs informed the Board that he had received the new collars lor the current year, when it was resolved to adveitise. that ratepayers can register their dogs at the office of the Board.—The accounts for payment having been passed, the Board then sat as a Board of Health.—A letter was read from Mr Rhcd *, in reply from the Solicitor to the Board, consenting fb take such steps as would abate any nuisance caused at his works.—The meeV ing then terminated.
