ENCOURAGE LOCAL INDUSTRIES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —If the youth of this Colony who, in three years, will be leaving the schools to the number of 15,000 annually, are to grow up with industrious habits, and to repay the cost of their education, something will have to bo done different to what is being done at the present time, and although such wonderfully clever men as Mr Pearson may sneer at these who are at great personal sacrifice working in the direction of changing the present condition of things, those efforts will not be relinquished. Mr Pearson is, in his matured wisdom, endeavouring to do what others have done, and are trying to perpetuate, viz., setting the country against the towns. But lam astonished that ihe member for Oxford, as a man burn in the Colony, does not show sympathy for others born here. And I would ask him in what better way than an increase of the tariff on manufactures can the industries and the manufactures of the Colony be encouraged? I would also ask him if he knows of a single article of trade that is now being made in the Colony which has been raised in price to the consumer? But if it is not true on the other hand tb it binder twine, ploughs, drays, and all other farm requirements, even including barbed wire, have not been considerably reduced in price through the local manufacture, why then does ho strive so earnestly to choke others’ efforts to make this Colony more indejiendent and self-supporting ?—1 am, &c , EDW. PAYITT.
