JUNIOR CUP. AD-INGTON v. MIDLAND. This, the final match for the Junior Cup, was commenced on Saturday last at Hagley Park. Hill, captain of the M.C.C. team, won the toss and elected to bat. The wicket, however, was very soft, and favoured the bowlers. Want of practice also told, and by 5.30 nineteen wickets had fallen for less than 100 runs. The Midlanders made a very poor start, five wickets being down for as many runs. Allardyce and Richards made a short stand, but at 16 the former was bowled by a break-hack from Atkinson. Two more wickets fell at the same score, but by the efforts of Broughton, Lawrence, and Turner the total was brought np to 42, when the last man was bowled. Atkinson’s bowling was no doubt a thorn in the side of the Midlanders, and he was well backed up by Turner. The fielding all round was good. The Addingtonians started well, but after the fall of the third wicket at 40 Lawrence howled in fine style, and, assisted by Turner, succeeded in getting nine of the suburbans’ wickets for 55. The light was bad after five o’clock, and to this fact must be put down the loss of some of the last wickets. The bowling and fielding of the M.C.C. was fair. Lawrence’s last five overs piodnced 3 runs for 4 wickets—all clean bowled. The match will be continued on Saturday next. The following are the scores:— MIBLAKD. First Innings.
