SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

, The adjourned meeting of this Council was held last evening j present—His Worship the 'Mayer, Councillors White, Lahgdown, Andrews, Wiehpll, Charters, Joyce, Pavitt, Shierlaw, and Halli ■ ' tiOEBBSPOJTDSOB. A letter was read from the.Drainsge Board forwarding copy of the new Bill proposed to be; introduced- at the next session of Pair* Jiament. . i It was decided that the Council should consider the Bill later on. | The Town Clerk of Christchurch Council -wrote',' forvrardihg copy of the resolution passed by that. b°dy relative to Sunday trading. | ; CbuttciUor Joyce moved—" That the City Odunoil be written .to, in reply,'calling their attention to the fact that the matter of Sunday trading is already provided for by an Act ;of the Parliament.” In the, remarks made by the mover of the resolution, he said that a number of professional gentlemen in Christchurch held, the opinion that the Magistrate was wrong in his decision, and the City Council hardly did themselves justice in going into Court with such a case without being represented by counsel. : , Councillor Charters seconded the motion, and said he had been informed that the man who was summoned by the City Council had some years ago been fined by Mr Bowen for a similar offence. ■ The motion was agreed to. 1 A ClSroular letter was read from the "Treasury, saying a cheque for £137 19s 6d, proportion of subsidy due to the. Borough for the half-year ending June 30, had been placed to the credit of the Borough Fund Account. to be acknowledged. A letter was read from the Town Clerk, Christchurch, in reply, dh the question of putting the South Town Belt in repair, regretting the inability of his Council to entertain the matter at 'present, Owing to want of funds. It was decided to consider this matter, further on. , . , : Messrs E, 6. J. Stevens and E* Bichardsori, • M.H.B.’s, wrote 'acknowledging receipt of Council’s., letter, relative to retention in Christchurch. of certain of the Railway Departments. Aletterwag read from the Bicearton Hoed Board in reply* stating thov,wprd unanimously of opinion that the Council’s claim on account of boundary road, was unjust, and therefore they refused to pay it. If the Council was not satisfied, they were referred to the Council’s solicitors.

■Referred to the Works Committee, with power to meet the Road Board and act. The-Clerk to the Drainage Board wrote, asking for, a cheque for rates collected on behalf of the Board.

The Borough Clerk was authorised to com* ply with the request. ' A circular was read from the Colonial Secretary’s’ office, enclosing three copies of the proposed Hospital and. Charitable Aid Bill, and stating that the Minister woqld bo glad to receive the Council’s suggestions thereon.

It was decided to consider the Bill at another meeting. A petition was read from some owners and occupiers of laud near Mollet's paddock, re. questing their street to be formed in accordance with the Act.

Deferred to the Works Committee, with power to act, ■VVOEKS COMMITTEE. ,

This Committee enumerated the. work required to be done to the Gasworks road to put it in as good condition as it was before being interfered with by the Drainage Board. With regard to the cost of formation of the. streets in Bandridge, .the Committee could .not ■ advise the Council to make any reduction in the rate. The Committee recommended that the petition of residents on Wilson’s land re formation and metalling private streets in that locality, should be granted in accordance with the Act.as desired. , A deputation from the Heathcote Road Board had been consulted respecting the designs prepared for Wilson’s bridge, and as the question of calling for alternative tenders had been left in the hands of the Council, the Committee would, suggest that these tendcris be called for. The Committee recommended that new tenders bo called for horse teams after the end of the present month, and also recommended that the attention of the Drainage Board should be, called to the dangerous condition of the sump at the corner of the Hazeldean and Windmill roads.

The report was adopted. SANITAEY COMMITTEE.

This Committee recommended with reference to Mr Bull’s slaughter-house, that the license should be'renewed, on the understanding' that the licensee enters into an agreement to keep the premises as required by the Council and pay the by-law fees. , The report was adopted, the agreement to ■bo prepared at the cost of the licensee. . i EINASCB COMMITTEE. This Committee reported, receipts for the last fortnight to have been £2ll 4s 10d ; accounts passed for payment, £9l 4s 9d ; leaving a credit balance, at the Bank on March 5 of £1448 3s fid. ;

The report was approved.

DEPUTATIONS. A deputation from the residents of • Bandriclge: waited on . the Oounoil to ask their decision with reference to the charge made for the formation of streets in that portion of the,Borough. The clause in the Works Committee relating to this matter was read. After some remarks, the deputation was informed , that if the charges were paid and the streets taken over, the Council might give the shingling at a low rate, and would then have , to consider the question of levels and drainage. . A resolution 1 to this effect was agreed to, payment to bo mado within a “month. A member of the deputation said that it was the'opinion of all the residents m that locality that the streets were not properly formed or finished, and would require on outlay. of. another £SO to put them m a proper condition to receive the shingling. Another member of the deputation expressed himself as very dissatisfied with the Council’s decision. , ■ , . . The Mayor said he thought the opinion of the residents, after what the Council had done for them, Savoured of ingratitude.
