Councillor Ellen proposed and Councillor Woodford seconded—" That this Council thoroughly endorses the resolution passed by the Christchurch City Council.”—Carried. WAIMAKAEIBI EKPOBT, Councillor Moore, proposed and Councillor Monk seconded—“ That the Clerk write to the Chairman- of .the Conference, enclosing Messrs Dobson and Son’s account and the letters received: from the West Eyreton and Mandeville and Rangiora Boad Boards,”— .Carried. : WpBKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee reported“ 1. That they had had an [interview with Mr Monk, who was willing to allow a reservoir to be put on his'premises in Peraki street, in consideration of .the!Council lining it with brick and finishing it off properly, so as not to be unsightly. The Committee had caused to be prepared plans and specifications for the work, .which were laid. on the table. The estimatedpost of the work would be £2B. As Mr Clark’s tender had been accepted for the one in Black street, which was not now going to be made,; the Committee had considered it only fair to offer him the contract, and he had agreed to do the work at a satisfactory price, which offer they recommended should be accepted. 2. The Committee have had the kerbing in Jones and Charles street finished. 3. The estimated cost of new rack and pinion for the swing bridge was £25.” It was resolved —“ That clauses 1 and 2 be adopted.” ■ — : ' ‘ With reference to clause 3, Councillor Woodford proposed and Councillor Ellen seconded pro forma —“ That the bridge be inspected by a competent and unbiassed person before the Council spend any more money thereon.” Councillor Elleh proposed as an amendment— 11 That clause 3 remain in abeyance for a time.” The amendment was seconded by Councillor Fraser’and carried, Councillors Wearing, Moore, and Woodford dissenting. PINANOB. The Finance Committee reported the receipts during the fortnight to have been £333 2s Bd, and the overdraft had been reduced to £133 4s Id. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £6 12s 6d were passed for payment. An account from Mr O. Oram for £6; for twelve trees used for protective works, was ordered to be laid. on the (table, the Counoilbeing of opinion that the trees were given gratis, as no account had, been sent in for them during the two years that had elapsed since, the work had been done. * DEDUCTIONS PBOM OHABITABLB AID. A Treasury voucher -was [received for £23 8s 6d, the balance of the £ for £ subsidy, less £152 deducted for charitable aid and maintenance of the Christchurch Hospital. ... , Councillor Pinching proposed, and Councillor Mathews seconded—“ That the Government bo informed that, unless the sums deducted from the £ for £ subsidy for charitable aid be refunded, this Council will discontinue distributing charitable hid in the town out of the Borough funds.” Councillor Ellen proposed, and Councillor Moore seconded as an amendment—" That the Government be referred to their letter of June, 1878, and be requested—as the Council had accepted their terms—to point out their reasons for making the deduction for charitable aid from the £ for £ subsidy.” The amendment was carried, Councillors Pinching and Mathews voting against it. BBIDGB OTBE MAIN DB&IN. Councillor Ellen asked why the bridge over the drain had not been repaired as ordered at the last meeting.” The Chairman of the Works Committee said thet as the work could not be done for the amount voted by the Council he had done nothing farther in the matter. ■ :; Y|HH PAN SYSTEM. It was resolved—“ That the Clerk ascertain the mode and expense of working of the pan system in Christchurch, and report at next meeting. DBAINAGH OB BAYBN QUAY. Tt was decided (hat Mr Alexander’s letter be referred to'the Works Committee; to report on at next meeting. Councillor Woodford drew. Attention to the want of a pipe drain aorbsa Raven quay, near Mr Holland’s premises. Referred to the Works Committee. ‘ SWING BBIDGB. The Mayor dre w : attention to the necessity for forming a sinking fund to provide a fund for rebuilding the Swing Bridge, and would suggest that 25 per cent of the rente beset aside for that purpose. Councillor Woodford said he would give in a notice of motion on the matter, for next meeting. ■ SIDE CHANNELS IN PBBAKI STBEBT. Councillor MoUkdrew attention to the state of the side channels in Peraki street. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. [ NOTICES OP MOTION. Councillor,Ellen to mover-" That the footpath from the Borough reserve corner to the railway station be asphalted four feet wide, and that a concrete channel with a wooden kerbing be placed iq, connection therewith, the channel to be similar to those on the Christchurch belts.” Councillor Woodford to move—" To consider the necessity for creating a fund for the purpose of re-building (he bridge, by setting apart 25 per cent, of the rents from the reserve.” jibe Council then adjourned.
