RECEIPTS. The Clerk reported the receipts as haying amounted to £IOB 16s Id since last meeting. CORRESPONDENCE. The following letters were read :- — From the Besident Engineer' New Zealand Bailways, stating that the. work of putting down the 3-inoh pipe at the Pumping station was being performed by the Bailway Depart, ment.' Councillor Beed said he had visited the works that day, and found the work proceed, ing very slowly, in 20 minutes the hole had only been deepened three inohes. There was about 10 feet more to. drive, and the work was expected to be finished by Wednesday. . From the same, stating that' instructions had been given for re-building the culvert from Norwich Quay, and that a copy of the drawing of the culvert proposed to be built would be forwarded shortly. Councillor Weybum said that there was no understanding between the Works Committee, and the Government.' The .culvert' that would be built by. the Council would be a continuation of the Salt’s gully culvert, and ih precisely the same style. A keenest was " made to the Government some three months since, to furnish plans, but no ( notice 'had been taken thereof,'so the Works Oommittee hadbeen authorised to carry out'the; work,, and the tender for the same had been let. ;W From Mr C.F. Barker, stating that he had an offer from a client' to lease reserve No. 2180, and askingtfae Oouncil’sauthority to put the same up for sale by auction. The acreage of the reserve wap stated by the Cfierk at 400 acres!. The matter was' referred to the Estates Committee, with power to act. From Messrs Whitby and Forbes, asking Council to form the accommodation road to their properties bn the Governor’s Bay road. Left to the Foreman of Works to report upon at the next meeting. From; the General Manager, New Zealand Bailways, stating that a yearly pass had been issued to Mr Kent, Engineer "to the water, works station; and asking the Council to forward cheque for £7 6s for same. Councillor M'datohie thought that, 1 considering the benefits derived from the water :Works to., the Government, and; that the Engineer partly Oh Government bonnets; the Government might grant a free, pass, ot. at leastgrant one at half rates. • ,; Councillors Hawkins and Beed said they .had seen Mr Back on the subject, makings like request, but he had told them that to® hadhopowerinthe matter, and it coiild; only be arranged by the authorities in W®** Ungton, It was resolved, that ths amount be. paid.' Councillor Smith asked what was the charge for meter* ?. , The Clerk replied Is per mouth, the Council putting them down,, ~ ~' V WATBBINO OF STREETS, Councillor'Smith stud that several of the business people in the town had spoken to him about watering the front of their business premises for the purpose of laying the dust, Since the advertisement had been inserted in the papers they had suffered considerably from the dust,, and they, yviehed the! matter brought forward. The quantity of water used was very small, and he considered that the practice was a public benefit, especially as the Council did not'water the streets frequently. Several Councillors thought that allowing such a practice would' be a contravention or the . by-law, and it wls suggested that the Water Supply Committee should consider the matter. ENGINE-HOUBB AX'WATBB WORKS. The Chairman said that Mr, 5- Ri Webb had spoken to him, protesting against the erection of the engine-house for the high level waterworks. Councillor Smith said Mr Webb had spoken to him on the subject, and he considered that .the, erection of the, building would ; detract from the;value of his property, Councillor/ Weed asked if there would be a nuisance from the noise of the engine.! Councillor Weyburn said that there would not, as the engine would be almost nbiieless. The, foundation for the building waa| in, and everything Was ready for going bn with the building. It was mentioned that it was rather late for Mr Webb to raise any objection* as he might have done ao at an earlier stage of the work. The matter was left in abeyance. DRAINS. The Chairman suggested that the Works Committee might take into consideration the advisableness of adopting some efficient means of flushing the tewers. during the summer months. The matter was discussed. SUNDAY TRADING. Councillor Wood asked if the Council had any power to stop shops being opened on Sunday nights. He noticed two shops open on Sunday evening last. He moved—- “ That the police be written’ to, calling their attention to,the,matter.” Seconded by Councillor Smith, and carried. EXCAVATIONS IN LONDON BIBEET. , Councillor Hawkins asked (he Work* Committee to .visit.. his premises, in .London street, with the view of having the necessary excavations made in front of his property. The footpath wanted cutting down to its proper level., It commenced at nothing, and ran up to about 6 feet. ■ Councill Seed moved—” That, the work be done at once.” . Seconded by Councillor Smith, and carried. . The Council then ad j ourned.
