PRESENTATION AT LOBURN.
Yesterday afternoon a gathering of a, pleasant nature took place in, the Loburn Schoolroom, in commemoration o£ the opening of the Ashley and Okuku bridges, works which will be of immense value to the dia-, triot# in which they are situaw. The gather- • ing took place at five o’clock, and after refreshment* of a substantial character had been served, a presentation was made to Mr S. Barwell the Chairman of the R°ad.Hoard, who has been mainly ihstmmenfal in,promoting the erection of tho bridges. The articles presented were a clock and, a watch,, obtained from the establishment of .Messrs, Coates and Co., Colombo street, Christchurch. The clock, which is pf black Italian marble, is of Egyptian design, two sphynxe* in wk green bronze being employed as **“o...ornaments, the supporting plinth* and the winged , ornaments under the face of the clock being also in bronze. The works of the clock are of French construction, with visible escapements. Upon the top is the. elevation of a hridge, in silver, with double arch and latticed rail, and above tho arches is engraved the following:—“Presented to. Mr Samuel Barwell, Chairman Ashley ■District, by the ratepayers, in' recognition of his service* ay, promoter of Ashley dray bridge, and hi* cbn., tinuous exertions in the interests ,of the diatrict.” The watch is a “silver hunting-ease, English lever, and bears a similar inscription on the inner case.
