ROAD BOARDS.

SOUTH RAKAIA. A special meeting of this Board was held at tho Board oflico on Thursday, August 15 j present—Messrs C. N. Maokie (Chairman), Neil Maclean, and J. N. Sharp.—A letter was read from Mr Or. Hart, Chairman of thoßakaiaand Ashburton Forks Railway Company, stating that it was the intention of tho Company to form their line along tho road known as Thompson’s Truck, and asking if tho Board had any objection to tlioir doing so.—Moved by Mr M'Lcan, and seconded by Mr Sharp—- “ That tho permission of this Board be given to tho Bakaia and Ashburton Bailway Company to run their lino of railway along, the south side of tho road, known as Thompson's Track.” Carried. ResolvOd Clerk forward a copy of tho foregoing resolution to tho Chairman of the Bukaia and Ashburton Forks Bailway.” KOWAI. A special meeting of tins Board was held on Saturday; present—Messrs Ensor (Chairman), Williams, Coleman, Mathers, and Kennedy.— A deputation, consisting of Messrs James Macfurlane, Vaughan, Thompson, Wyllie, and Poach, attended with a view to getting help

Mr Moofarlane opened the proceedings by stating their object in waiting upon the Board, after which Mr Vaughan produced a list of 69 persons whose property was liable to be affected in case of serious overflow of the Ashley. All these persons, with three or four exceptions, were willing to have a special rate of 9d in the £ levied upon their property. The deputation wished to know if the Board would supplement the amount aeorucdfroTn the rate by giving £1 for every £1 collected, and undertake the supervision of the works that might be decided on. The Board requested a little time to consider their reply, and the deputation withdrew. On re-entering the Chairman of the Board submitted the following resolution for the consideration of the deputation:— “That the Board are willing to grant £1 for every £1 raised by the parties interested up to £IOO, The work is to be carried out by the committee of subscribers, and vouchers for expenditure are to be submitted to the Board. The Board will not undertake any liability in the matter.” The deputation declined to give an immediate reply, but would take time to consider, and, thanking the Board, withdrew. The proceedings then terminated,

The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held on Monday, August 12 ; present All the members.-—Correspondence was road— From the Under-Secretary of Public Works, with reference to to the stoppage of the road over the Fcrnsidc Downs to Ashley; aim asking to be furnished with three copies of the newspaper containing advertisement notifying the stoppage of such road. The Chairman reported having forwarded them.— From the Crown Solicitor, on the same subject.—From the Steward of Educational Reserves, asking to be supplied with a lithographed plan of the Oust Road district. The Clerk was directed to forward him one.— From Mr W. Beere, calling the notice of the Board to the dangerous conditions of the bank from which the contractor obtained the shingle he was putting on the Ashley road.— From the Oxford Road Board, declining to pay half the cost of the bridge on Bennett’s road over the Oust, unless the bridge be made as large as the one over the main drain on the same road.—The Clerk reported that by direction ho had made the alteration desired by the Oxford Road Board.—From the Domain Board, stating that they could not supply the Board with any quick plants for the plantation reserves.—From the Clerk, tendering his resignation as Clerk to the Board, and thanking the members of the Board for the kindness, courtesy and consideration extended to him during the four years and ahalf that he had held office. Mr Higgins moved and Mr Dickinson seconded—" That the Board, in accepting Mr Ingram’s resignation of the post of Clerk, desires to express its entire confidence it liim, and regrets that it is necessary for him to leave the service of the Board.” The Clerk was directed to invite applications for the post of Clerk, and to prepare a specification of his duties.—After considerable discussion it was decided to widen Page’s road and fill in the drain in the centre of the road.—The Clerk was directed to write to the Steward of Reserves, and ask him if permission eould be obtained by the Board to let the plantation reserves, so as to provide funds to keep the plantations in the district in order, and repair the fences when required.—The Clerk was directed to call for tenders for metalling portion of Terrace road, and making cutting at Gardner’s on same road.—Tenders were opened for various works in the district, and one in each case accepted. —Accounts to the amount of £999 9s 8d were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
