The Lyttelton Times. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7, 1877.

Deaught Hobbes. —Several heavy draught horses were brought up by Mr Trestrail from Dunedin in the s.s. Taranaki, yesterday. The animals are all in good condition. Osowded Out. Our leaders, various reports, and a largo quantity of correspondence have been unavoidably held over, through a pressure of advertisements. Football. —Preliminary steps will be taken this week towards opening the football season. It is expected that practice will be arranged to commence on the first Saturday in April. Tbce Refuge.— At a recent meeting of the Refuge Committee Dr Patrick was appointed Surgeon Accoucheur to the Institution. Dr Nedwill continues to be Honorary Visiting Physician and Surgeon. Ashlbv Counts Council. —The Council will meet at the Boad Board office, Bangiora, to-morrow, at 1.30 p.m., for ordinary business. A special meeting is arranged for 3 p.m. to reconsider tho decision formerly arrived at regarding the adoption of the whole of the Counties Act. The majority of the members are s till against the adoption of the permissive portion.

Kaiatoi Regatta. Entrie* for this regatta close to-morrow evening at 8 p.m. Kaxapoi Loyal Change Lobqb. —An Arch Purple Chapter will be held to-morrow evening at half-past 7 o’clock, Oantbbbuey Go-opbbatits Society.— The prospectus of the Canterbury Co-opera-tive Society is published in an advertisement. Skating. —Professor Taylor and Lillie are at present exhibiting their skill in the art of skating at Timaru, where they are meeting with very liberal support. Habewood Eoad Sunday School.—A public tea meeting and childrens’ treat, in connection with the Church Sunday School, will be held to-morrow evening in the district schoolroom. Levels Eoad Boaed.— Yesterday was the day appointed for the election of a member for the Levels Eoad Board in the place of Mr Belfield, resigned, but as no person came forward for nomination, the election fell through. Ebbhbenob Libeaey. —Three oases of books for the Eeferenoe Library have arrived in the ship Wiltshire. They comprise nearly four hundred volumes, and appear to have been very judiciously selected at a cost, in England, of upwards of £2BO. Matbioulation Examination.— This examination was commenced at the Normal school on Monday last. There nine candidates. The examination, which is conducted by the Professors connected with the Canterbury College, will conclude to-morrow. All-England Blbtbn.— The eighth match in New Zealand was commenced yesterday, at Invercargill, between the All-England Eleven and Twenty-two of Invercargill. The Eleven went in first, and, when the stumps were drawn, had scored 91 tuns with the loss of four wickets. Thk Skating Bins.— There was a large attendance at this place of amusement last night, when Miss Lydia Howarde, Mdlle. Navaro, and Mr W. F. Baker were again very successful in their singing. Mdlle. Franzini also appeared on the bicycle, her performance being loudly applauded. ABBBST 01 POOiBT AND BSAMHALL.— An Agency telegram, in addition to the facta given in our correspondent's telegram, states that the arrest of Pooley and Bramball was made under “The Malicious Injuries to Property Act”; that they are charged with having injured property above the'value of £5 belonging to Ralph Donkin, and that they are to appear at Christchurch on March 12. Kaiafoi Institute.— The monthly meeting of the Committee was held on Monday evening last. There were seven members present, and Mr Bean was voted to the chair. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £B9 at the Bant. Several accounts were passed for payment. An extension of time was given to the Finance Committee to bring up their report. After transacting some formal business, the meeting adjourned. The Late Taxidbbmist. —The Eev Charles Fraser and Mr Potts beg to acknowledge the receipt of the following emus, closing the account on behalf of the widow and family of the late Taxidermist at the Museum: —Mr Montgomery, £2 j Mr J. D. Hill, £2 2s; Miss Pope 10s. The total amount collected is £B6 10s 6d, of which £lol2s was paid for funeral expenses, £ls to Mrs Puller, and the balance, £6olßs 6d, according to Mrs Puller’s own request, invested for behoof of herself and the children.

Licensing Ooubt.— The quarterly meeting of Licensing Commissioners was held yesterday, when a number of new applications were heard, bat refused. The number of extra bar licensee which would be required by tho city hotel-keeper* was fixed by the Court, after carefully considering the ground plans of the various hotels. Mr George Beattie, of tho Palaoe Hotel, is tho worst sufferer by the new order of things. Unless tho internal arrangements of his hotel are altered, he will have to pay for three extra bar licenses, which will jast doable the amount he now pays for his hotel license. Timasu Public School.— A meeting of the School ■ Committee was held on Monday evening. The reports of the Visiting Committee, the Head Master, and Head Mistress, were read. Mr Onthbert having gained a second-class certificate, his appointment as Second Master was confirmed. Miss Quinlan reported the gross attendance in the Infant School was 350; the daily average, 300. It was resolved to request the Board of Education to appoint Miss A. Quinlan Mistress of the Infant School, and Miss Hamilton Second Mistress of the Girls’ School, each at £l5O per annum. Old College Boys.—A general meeting of the Old College Boys’ Association was held last evening at Badoliffe’e Hotel, Mr Thos. Gordon in the chair. The following members were elected officers of the Association for the year President, Mr Geo. Harper; Secretary, Mr Thos. Gordon; Treasurer, Mr T. D, Oondell; Committee, Bev B. Dudley, Messrs O. F. Barker, A. J. Ootterill, M. Davie, B. Dobson, J. Gould, W. Hartland, W. M. Ollivier, A. M. Ollivier, D. Potte, A. S. Stedman, and J. Waohsmann. It was resolved that the annual subscription be 10s. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the meeting. Oeiokbt.— The match between eleven of the M. 0.0.0. and eleven of the College was resumed on Saturday, and terminated by the College Eleven being beaten in one innings. To-morrow a match will be played at Sunnyside, between eleven of the Lyttelton Cricket Club and eleven of Sunnyside. A muff match at cricket will be played on the Hagley park ground to-morrow, tho two elevens to be selected from the following gentlemen:—Bev J. Cummins, Messrs Sawtell, Lawson, Peterborough, Swinton, Oroibie, Ward, Bruce, Briggs, J. Mann, Stringer, Woodford, F. Pavitt, Hobday, Fleming, Smith, B. Hale, Halbert, Fountains, Bone, Seager, F. LITTLB BIVES ChUBOH BUILDING Oojfmittbb.— —A meeting of the above Committee was held in the schoolroom on Saturday evening last; present, Rev E. Otway (in the chair), Messrs Coop, Fowrie, Tyson, Fillon, and Westropp. The Chairman read the following correspondence, viz : —From his Lordship the Bishop, enclosing the appointment of churchwardens and committee. From the Diocesan Secretary, re grant of £B6 13s 4d for church building. It' was stated that several sites had been inspected, and the one thought most suitable fixed on, but no good title to it could be obtained, and, therefore, it was out of the question. After some conversation, Mr W. Coop kindly offered a site, if the Committee thought it suitable. The Committee thanked Air Coop for his offer and it was decided to accept the same. The size and the cost of the church were then considered, and it was resolved to authorise the Chairman to obtain plans and estimate of a church capable of seating 100 persons. City Council. —An adjourned meeting of the City Council was held at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon; present—his Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Thomson, Bird, Nathan, Jones, Turner, and Hawkes. The Council went into Committee for the purpose of considering the schedule of specifications that had been drawn up by the City Surveyor for asphalting the streets of Christchurch. On resuming, the specifications with amendments were adopted, the only dissentient being Councillor Jones, who gave in his protest on the ground that there was no by-law to enable the Council to recover from the ratepayers their contribution towards the expenses. The specifications were then handed over to the Works Committee to commence operations at once. Councillor Bird drew the attention of the Council to the fact that a large building in the centre of the city was now being covered with shingles in consequence of the absence of any by law on the subject. He would recommend the adoption of the Dunedin by-laws, which, he thought, were very good ones. Councillor Nathan said that after reading about the horrible catastrophe at the Brooklyn theatre, he thought it right to ask if the theatre in Christchurch had been properly examined, and if the modes of exit were satisfactory. The Surveyor said there were plenty of modes of exit Councillor Nathan would like to know if the means of exit at the Bink were satisfactory, as be had heard there were over 2000 persons present one night. The Surveyor replied in the affirmative. The Council then considered some applications for licenses, after which it adjourned until Monday next
