CITY COUNCIL.

—— Monday, Nor, 29. The Council met at 4 p.m. Present—The Mayor and all the Councillors. FINANCIAL. It was reported that the overdraft at the Bank amounted to £746 18s Id. Receipts during the week: City rates, 1876, £196 19s; Waimakeriri do, £32 16s 6d; rent of Market place, 7s; license, £1; total, £231 2s 6d. Wages, contracts, &o. (City account), £lOl 4s; do, (drainage account), £l9 Bs. Overdraft to drainage account, £4445 8s 9d; credit to drainage rate account, £1764 4s sd. SPECIAL MEETING. The Mayor reminded the Council that a special meeting of the Council would bo held on Thursday next, at 10 a.m. relative to the borrowing of money for drainage purposes. block no. 4. Mr J, W. Treadwell waited on the Council, and explained that if the roads were formed it would tend to drain the land at the back of the High School, from the surface water in his neighbourhood, and prevent the necessity of deepening the open sewer running through the land. It was resolved that the Works Committee be instructed to delay proceeding with the drainage works in the neighbourhood for a fortnight, to enable Mr Treadwell to proceed with the formation of the roads as proposed, sdpbemb oduav. On the motion of Councillor Tamer, seconded by Councillor Ick, it was resolved—- “ That a letter be written to the Secretary for Public Works, requesting the removal of the heap of stones opposite the Supreme Court.” suevbyoe’s eepoet. The City Surveyor reported:— 1. Tenders for channelling Eilmore, Salisbury, and Peterborough streets will be laid before the Council, this evening, Bach street will be a separate contract. 2. The drawings and specifications for Hereford street bridge are now ready, and tenders are advertised for. 3. An application has been made to me to inspect a chimney in the factory of Messrs Lightband and Co., in Manchester street, but as the property in question is not .within the fire block, it is not subject to the by-law under which I must act. 4. A report was made to his Worship the Mayor, that some damage had been purposely done to the brick sewer on the South and East belt. 1 have examined the sewer, and cannot find that any damage has been done, but as a great portion of it is under water, it is not possible to say. 6. From the heavy rains, these belts are in the same deplorable condition that they were in after the last heavy rain, and as I reported on that occasion, the sewer is carrying off the water as fast as its [capacity will allow. It is easy to see, at the present moment, that the sewer is quite full, as the water in the open drain on the South belt is higher by some inches than the top of the arch of the brick sewer. TENDEES. Tenders were opened for the channelling of Eilmore, Salisbury, and Peterborough streets. On the motion of Councillor Ick, it was resolved that the of Prudhoe and Cooper be accepted for Eilmore street, and that of Mr Jarvis Beard for Salisbury and Peterborough streets. The second paragraph in the Surveyor’s report wasjapproved, as also the remainder of the report. COBEBSPONDBNOB. A letter was read from Mr R. P. Croshie, applying for the use of Latimer square for the , Sports on the 16th, and for the usual contribution towards the same. The request was granted, and it was resolved, on the motion of Councillor Jones, seconded by Councillor Ick—“ That the timber be given to the Sports’ Committee{for the erection of a grand stand.” A letter was read from Mr J. Andrews, Salisbury street west, calling attention to the state of the footpaths. Referred to the Works Committee. A letter was read from Lieut.-Col. Facke, drawing attention to the condition of the footpath in a comer of Cathedral square. Referred to the Surveyor, to have the work done in the usual way. A letter was read from Mr I. Allen, calling attention to rain water which was kept back on Peacock street, on account of the Durham street footpath not being cut through by the Council. Referred to the Surveyor, A letter was read from Mr [James Boot, notifying his consent to any diversion of Free’s Creek, which ran through bis land, for the purpose of forming Eilmore street otherwise. _ to the same effect was read from Mr E. C. Mohldey. Referred to the Works Committee, to take what course they think proper. A letter was read from Mr George Findlay and others, calling attention to the condition of the last ten chains of Madras street. Referred to .the Surveyor. A letter was read from Mr George Gould, asking that the footpath from the Papanui roadj commencing at the kerb and continuing from Eilmore street to the verandah in front of his buildings, might bs asphalted to the width of four feet on the usual conditions. [Consideration of this letter had been previously deferred.] The letter was again deferred for a week. THE LATE TOWN OLEEK, The letter already published in the Lyttelton Times, from an ex-Councillor, re the proposed vote of £3OO, was read to the Council. The Mayor stated that the writer of the letter was Mr Bishop, who had worked longer with the lata Mr Gordon than any other member of the Council. It was resolved, that the letter be acknowledged with thanks. WIDENING OF COLOMBO STEEBT.
