TEMPLETON PLOUGHING MATCH.

The annual ploughing match came off on Tuesday last, in a field about a mile distant from the railway station, belonging to Mr J. Hedging. A good many spectators were present, induced by the fineness of the wea ther to take a holiday. The ground, on the whole, was very fair, but brittle, being a light piece that had not been cropped for the last two years, and covered with sorrel. The judges, Messrs Dunn, Langstreth, and Jackson, commenced their work at 3 pm punctually, but they experienced so much difficulty in deciding, that three more, for the second and boys’ classes, had to be appointed —Messrs K, Prebble, Dixon, and Matthews It was dark before any decision was arrived at, and then only for the second class, the judges reserving their award for the first and boys’ classes till the following day. In the evening, about 50 sat down to dinner at the George and Dragon. Mr W. B. Toaswill, M.P.C., occupied the chair, and Mr F. W. Delamain, M.P.C., the vice-chair. After the usual loyal toasts had been disposed of, a discussion on ploughing took place. Mr J. Taylor, of Yaldhurst, read an interesting letter from a large implement manufacturing firm in Dudley, about plough making and the sorts suitable for different kinds of soil.

The judges again met on Wednesday, and came to a conclusion about the prizes. The following is a list of the entries and prizes awarded : First Class. Ploughman. Owner. Plough. W. Ladbrooke W. Those who take an interest in the progress of local manufactures will be pleased to learn that there were thirteen Canterbury made ploughs on the ground, the three first prizes in the first class being taken by ploughs of colonial make. Two double-furrow ploughs, made by Keetley and Blyth respectively were on the ground, and attracted a considerable amount of attention during the day. The judges reported favourably on the Keetley plough, although it was not considered in a fit condition for match ploughing. They considered the Blyth plough too complicated. The prizes were handed to the respective winners on Wednesday evening, at the George and Dragon, by Mr F. G. Stedman, the honorary secretary.
