CITY COUNCIL CUP.

In no competition amongst the marksmen' of Christchureh is there a greater spirit of emulation and rivalry shewn than in those for the cup presented by each successivechairman of the City Council, The example set by Mr I, Luck has been followed by his successors in office, and the several companies have acknowledged their appreciation of the gifts by establishing them as the premier prizes for squad firing. Previous to the establishment of the "City Council Cup" competition, the matches occasionally arranged between the several companies were characterized by a great amount of indifference, and it was very seldom that the bona fide merits of any were really decided. The cup presented by Mr Luck, however,, renewed and increased the spirit of rivalry amongst the companies, and there can be no doubt but the continuance of it by his successors has been the means of bringing morethan one good shot into notice, who otherwise might never have taken the trouble to practise. So far, then, the object in view has been promoted, and the continuance of the competitions is much to be desired. The effect it has also had upon improving the "veteran shots,"is also great,as the continually increasing scores amply testify, the last firing for Mr Bishop's cup being unequalled in the province, and very rarely beaten elsewhere.

The first competition for the cup given by Mr W. Wilson, the present Chairman of the u'n y T Council ' to . ok place ou Sat « r day, at Hillsborough, under the management of the volunteer general committee, the conditions being the same as on previous occasions, viz., five men from each company wth seven, shots each at 200,400, and 500 yajus, Hythe scoring, position, and targets. The 'firing; commenced at one o'clock, the repiesentatives being divided into two squads 'and placed respectively under the command of CaptLean and Lieut. Woolfe. The arrangements were greatly improved compared with/former competitions.and everything consequently worked smoothly, and tothesatisfaotioi/of all. The markers were jointly provided Jy the contesting companies, and the representatives of each were equally divided/ between thesquads, thus giving all the sime advantages of targets and position. / The weather was, with the exception of a little too much sun at the first range, fully up to the standard of/the most fastidioi* marksmen, being bright and clear w& scarcely any wind. /

At the first range the Artillery tor* tn & ead by 12 points, with No 6 second This they continued to Wrease to the fini<>. whilst No 6 fell back, No / taking their pace. The shooting was scarry equal to th«& at the last cup competition.Jut it was s<Jl very good, M the score of tli winning .squad being an ■ average of thre/'points ove» ceutrcs. PrivateCakes had the'ionour of making the highest score by M\j very steadily at each range. The Artiller/will hold the cup for twelve months w he/it will be again competed for, but should/they then be successful, it will become tlier private property.
