COMMERCIAL.

GRAIN REPORT. The grain and flour market on Saturday, was by no means redeemed from the dulnesa which we imputed to it up to Friday. There was not only no advance on the prices we quoted in our issue of Saturday, but there was an unusually small number of buyers in the market, which, looked it superficially, might seem to be a symptom of further decline. But it is probably not so. The weather was most unfavourable for business or travelling, whilo sowing, planting, or preparing for these operations, keep many men at home in the present season, until they must come to market. Hokitika.—The West Coast Times of September 3, in its Summary for England via Panama, reports : Business since our last snmmary has fully realised anticipations; imports have not been heavy, but evidently arranged with a studied calculation as to our requirements. Markets bare not been overstocked with any class of goods; shipments arriving from the adjacent colonies coastwise could scarcely have been belter adapted to our wants. Stocks of principal staples on the whole are leas than at corresponding date last month, and but little fluctuation has been experienced in prices; the demand, for town and country trade during the month has been remarkably steady, and towards the close shown a decided improvement. Tiiis might have been fairly anticipated, tho weather having'been remarkably good, population increasing, the goldfields hitherto worked continuing to yield well, and now supplemented by new fields opened, promising excellent returns. The commercial aspect of the West Coast must be looked upon as very cheering; confidence remains unshaken, and will, no doubt, increase with the rapid development of Hokitika as a commercial town and port. Beer in hulk has come in moro freely, and met with better demand at £8 10s to £ll for new brew. Colonial continues to be taken freely at £6 to £B. Beer in glass has not been oilered to any extent: the mild weather experienced of lati has led to somo inquiry, but without alteration in prices. Blood's and Guinness's stout find limited sale at lCs to 18s per doz. Ale, known brands, realises los to 10s 6d per doz. Brandy continues low in stock. Hennessy's and Kartell's, 9s 3d to 10s; Otard's, lis; other brandy 8s 3d to 8s 9d per gallon. Case brandy has not been so much inquired for. Geneva is scarce; for JDKZ 17s to 18s could bo realised. VH and key are nowmore freely taken at a sha'le less than JDKZ. "Whisky and Old Tom remain unaltered, the supply and demand remain about equal. Wines of good character continue scarce, and may be considered firmer; low sherries are neglected, the enquiries being for a better class. Provisions have been in fair supply. Hams and bacon are not so firm. Sinclair's and (Joey's hams, Is lOd and Is 9d; bacon, ls4d to Is 6d. The continued good supply of fresh meat materially affects the consumption of these articles. Butter is unaltered. The supply has of late been very regular, and parcels bavo been sold at ship's side at 2s 3id to 2s 4d, for prime Wellington, whilst parcels have changed hands privately at 2s 4d to 2s 6d. Cork is out of the market. Cheese remains unaltered. There is a fair demand for good Port Cooper at Is 3d to Is 4d per lb. Oilmen's Stores are in moderate supply. 'Well assorted invoices are placed at paying prices, but the demand is not considerable. Candles ara not so firm as last quoted, light stock alone keeping them from more decided decline; Is 5d to Is Cd is the price now asked for then: demand limited. Flour has very little changed in value for some time, the market continuing remarkably steady; stocks have rather increased, but are yet light. Adelaide shows rather a downward tendency, worth £22 to £23 per ton; Chilian, £l6 to £l7. A small shipment of Woods (colonial) silk dressed, in 501b bags, realised £l9 per ton at ship's side. Oats have continued Drm, and improved on our last quotations, A shipment .per Cosmopolite (prime) brought 9s 3d to 9s 6d on the wharf, which may be considered present market rates. Stocks are light. Bran, more plentiful, at 3s to 3s 2d, Chaff has been sold at £2l on wharf. Potatoes, plentiful, at £7 to £9 per ton.

Melbourne,—The latest commercial news is dated August 31. as extracted from the S. M. Herald's telegrams:— Business is quiet through the tightness of the money market. Supplies of Chilian wheat to hand are under offer at 6s. At auction, 2000 bushels Californian wheat was quitted at from 6s. to 6s 6d, according to condition. Maize is offering freely at 4s 7d to 4a 9d. A shipment of 60 pockcts of hops sold at Is 6d. Iu tobaccos, dark half-pounds sold at Is 2d; fifty cases tens on private terms. Provisions difficult of sale. Fifty qrcasks Jamieson's whisky were quitted at 4s. A large auction sale of wines and spirits was hold to-day, but resulted unsatisfactorily. An auction sale of Scotch flooring resulted in the disposal of 500,000 feet, at prices showing an improvement on the last sale. Sidney.—The Herald of September 1, states as follows : Since the departure of the Huahine trade has been very quiet, and the disposition manifested by the banks to limit facilities for discounting has seriously inconvenienced many persons engaged in mercantile pursuits, and business at present is entirety limited to trade supplies, for which sales are made at low rates, for cash, Coals, shipments to California have been more extensive than the results of last ad rices would appear to warrant. Local companies' prices remain unaltered. The market for breadstuff* opened more firmly this week than for some time past, and holders looked for a speedy improvement in prices, which lately hare not been satisfactory to importers, but any tendency to this result has for the present been checked by the arrivals of the Aircveda, Mary and Edith, Chili, and Enterprise, witli nearly 2400 tons of Chilian wheat and flour. The two latter vessels are on Adelaide account, and have linco been ordered on to Melbourne. Present quotations are-Chilian wheat 5s lOd to 6s 2d, California 0s to 6s 3d, Adelaide 6s 9d, scarce. Flour: Sydney mills, £ls to £ls 10s; Californian, £lO to £l6 10s: Chilian, £l3lO to £l4.
