PROBABILITY OF A EUROPEAN WAR. [A portion of the following was issued as an ' Extra' yesterday.] The Airedale arrived in Lyttelton this clay at one p.m., with intelligence from England to the sth March, brought from Sydney to Auckland by the s.s. Claude Hamilton. The absorbing topic of interest is the Polish insurrection, which is spreading fast, and threatens to resuscitate all the unsettled questions affecting a nation which has been trodden under foot for years by the three despotic powers. Numerous encounters have taken place between the Poles and the Russian troops, the insurgents are triumphant, and the Russian Government lias had to make concessions. A convention has been entered into between Russia and Prussia, by the terms of which the Russians can pursue Poles and transport troops across the frontier. The English Government boldly denounces the proceedings, and expresses sympathy with the Poles, wishing them success. France is greatly agitated, both press and people taking part in the discussion. A war is anticipated. The Paris Bourse and the London Stock Exchange are much depressed, and business is consequently checked. Subscription lists have been opened in England and Prance for the benefit of the Poles. Garibaldi lias issued an appeal to arms, calling upon the people of the Danube to rise with the Poles. The English papers announce that the PostmasterGeneral of New Zealand had an interview with the Duke of Newcastle on the 11th February in reference to the Panama route. AMERICA. The proffered mediation of France in American affairs has been rejected by the Federals, but favorably received by the Confederates. The attack on Charleston has been abandoned. Savannah is threatened. The Federal Government have authorised the issue of letters of Marque. Gold has risen to 63 prem.
