GENTLEMEN,— I beg to offer myself as a candidate for your suffrages at the next election of members for the Provincial Council. In so doing I wish to state that I come forward with the view of supporting every movement which will advance the general interests of the province, and those of the tradesmen of Christchurch in particular, which body I consider has not hitherto been fairly represented. If, elected, I should feel it my duty to vote for liberal supplies to be given to the Municipal Coun-* cil for the purpose of carrying on the drainage; street-making, and other improvements of the city. ' • I should also vote for the education grant to be equally divided among all denominations, according to the numbers taught. i I will likewise support every motion which will favour the extension of the railway, and the develop-1 ment of the minerals of the province. I am obliged to those electors who favoured me with their support at the late election of the Municipal Council, and hope again to receive their support. I have resided amongst you for many years, and my time being now wholly unoccupied, I have sufficient leisure to devote to your interests with which my own are closely connected. I have the honour to be, gentlemen, Your obedient servant, HOBERT WAITT. Christchurch, March 24, 1862. 1240 TO THE ELECTOKS OF THE LINCOLN DISTRICT. GENTLEMEN, —Having been requested by several influential electors to become a candidate in the forthcoming election, I beg to solicit your suffrages for the purpose of returning me as one of your representatives in the Provincial Council. If elected, I will advocate, as far as my voice and vote can do so, not only that a proper amount be expended as heretofore in public works, but that a fair outlay be made to benefit outlying districts. For the want of a small vote of public money, I have seen the progress of large districts held in check, and as all cannot enjoy the luxury of living on a main road, I deem it to be unjust to deny assistance to those beyond its limits. 1 have no past political course to which I can refer; but after my long residence amongst you, I trust it will not be necessary for me to do more than implicitly to assure you that, should I have the honor of being elected, I will give due attention to the interests of your district, and honestly and independently endeavour to promote the general advancement of the province.
