' TASMANIA. ' Town Mercury* of August 29, says: In the'import marketsMnisiness has been very dull throughout theweek; and with one or two ex«ehtiotis prices have undergone no alteration. The -submarine cable is not yet in action, owing to-some mishaps at Cape;Otway, which render it impossible to" exactly fix the time when the colony will be in telegraphic communication with Melbourne, as a few°days must necessarily elapse before the late accident can be remedied. Grain, &c—The supply of wheat has been somewhat scarce this week as compared with the few previous weeks, but any that has come forward has gone off readily at full market rates. The general figuretforwheat has been 12s. per bushel, though in oiie or two instances a higher figure was given for some very prime samples; but since the arrhal of the mail from Melbourne yesterday, the news by which has been further confirmed by our telegram of this morning, an advance of 6d. per bushel has been established, and sales have been made to-day at 12s. 6d.; some holders, however, are asking higher rates. Next to nothing has been doing in oats, which are quoted, from 3s. 6d. to 4s. per bushel for colonial. Barley is seldom asked for—English-at 4s. 6d. to 55., and Cape at 3& 6d. to 4s. Hay main-,. tains previous rates, loose and country pressed still fetching from £4 to £6 a ton, according to quality, A few parcels of potatoes are occasionally shipped; away, but the demand is quiet; best samples remain at £2 10s. to £3 per ton. Flour.—Until to day flour has been selling .throughout the week at £29 per ton, but since the receipt of later advices from Melbourne an advance of £1 per ton has taken place, and fine flour i 3 quoted to-day at £30 per ton. Bran remains at Is. 6d. to Is: 9d. per bushel. ■ • ; : Timber.—The timber trade shows no signs of improvement, *and the demand is still light. The following are the wholesale prices from the boats.: Palings, 5 feet, 6s. to 6s, 3d.; ditto, 6 feet, Bs. 6d.. to Bs. 9d. ; shingles, Bs. to 9s. ; ditto, good, 11s. to 125.; laths, 3 feet. 35.; ditto, 3 feet 6 inches, -3s. 6d.; ditto, very good, Bs. to 9s. 6d.; posts and rails, 255. to 305.; battens, 6s. 6d. to Bs.; market cut, 4s. 9d.to 55.; full cut, Bs. to Bs. 6d.; boards, one inch, 9s.- 6d. to 9s. 9d.; ditto, half inch, 7s ; 6d. to Bs. r The same journal of one day later adds :—The advance in the wheat markets on the other, side of the Straits has produced a corresponding effect here, and a rise was at once established; wheat sold today at 12s. 6d. per bushel, and in one or two instances 133. was given for some very prime samples. There have been several inquiries for potatoes, and prices exhibit an upward tendency; best sam- :■ pies are quoted to-day at £2 15s. to £3 per ton. The usual average business is doing in flour for local purposes, and prices are firm. Flour from the best colonial wheat is selling at £30 per ton. Bran remains at Is. 6d. to Is. 9d. per bushel. ■: ADELAIDE. < The' Mercury' gives the following latest news from Adelaide, — ; ■' , . Wednesday August 24. About 145 tons of flour sold freely at £28 10s. Market rising. . Wheat, little coming in, quoted at 13s.
