THE TRANSVAAL WAR.

LONDON, August 14. The Boers in the Orange River Colony are suffering from great scarcity of food. Commandant Beyers was dangerously wounded in a recent engagement. Commandant Pretorius died of wounds in the eye inflicted at Kotzepoort in Jmly. A pro-Boer Frenchman, after interviewing the Boer leaders in Holland, assured the Paris correspondent of ‘ The Times ’ that all excepting Mr Kruger, who is sublimely stubborn, were absolutely discouraged by Mrs Botha's report of the state of affairs. Dr Leyds and other leaders had made up their minds to the inevitable. One hundred Boers were prevented crossing the Klip drift at Plodders towards the Cape. General Plv.mer sent the New Zealanders in pursuit. An armored train repulsed a party of train-wreckei-s at Naboomspruit on Saturday, killing ten Boers. The ‘ Morning Post’s ’ Pretoria correspondent states that the Boers are showing a general tendency to be captured. Lord' Kitchener has sent a copy of his proclamation with a letter to Mr Steyn and General Botha. Dr John Clifford, president of the Metropolitan Free Churches Council, and 500 Free Church ministers have presented a peace manifesto favoring an amnesty, autonomy, and compensation to Sir H. C. Bannerman, who replied that a settlement on these lines would be one of sound policy, common sense, and Christian principles.
