A Unicyele.

The dream of a unicycle or one-wheel vehicle has been realised by Mr. Higley, of Boston, U.S.A. The weight of the wheel and trappings is " only" 541b. It can be turned in a 40ft. circle, and is easily managed. The material used to build it is that contradiction-provoking metal, aluminium, and it stands 7ft. 3in. high ; the rim carries a pneumatic tire. A smaller wheel occupies the interior of this, and is connected to it by steel spokes. The rider of the unicycle sits within the smaller wheel, astride its lower part. A double fork hangs with one prong on either side of the wheel. Between the prongs, at the bend of the fork, is mounted a roller, which, by the weight of the rider in the saddle above it, is pressed against tjie inner wheel. A pair of pedals with cranks and cogwheels are mounted at the other ends of the prongs near the ground. From these wheels chains are geared to others on the roller under the saddle. Steering is managed by leaning the body in the desired direction.
