An ordinary monthly meeting was held on Tuesday evening last, and was attended by His Worship the Mayor (H. Graham, Esq.), and Crs L, H. Pres ; ton, J. Reid, W. Selby and J. Jenkins. W. Jenkins and 00. wrote, applying for a renewal of their slaughtering license.—Granted. Letters were read from Messrs T, Todds and Sons, and S. Buxton, Southland, re the price of earthenware pipes. —Held over. F, W. F. Geisow, Town Clerk, Queenstown Borough Council, wrote, stating that their Council was of opinion that the three boroughs in this electoral district should send a joint requisition to the member to object to the passing of the proposed new Local Government Bill, by which all three boroughs would be abolished, and they would feel obliged by the Arrow Borough Council letting them know whether they would join in such a requisition. Proposed by Cr Preston, seconded by Cr Selby—That this Council regrets that it does not coincide with the views of the Queenstown Borough Council re the abolition of the boroughs, and respectfully decline to be a party, or sustain a proposition supporting the present system of Borough Councils. The Mayor said he was in favor of Cr Preston’s motion, and he was quite sure three out of four of the ratepayers would like to see this borough abolished. The bill had been carefully prepared, and was the outcome of Mr Seddon’s brain, and it deserved all consideration. Or Preston 5 The matter is not foreign to us, it has been before the Council before. The Mayor i My opinion is that the matter should be loft with the ratepayers to deal with. Or Preston : You must understand we are the ratepayers’ delegates. The feeling of the Council, as outside, is that the borough should be wiped out. Cr Reid said he was in favor of the doing away with the Council, and he would support the proposition. His Worship thought that as Cr Jenkins was a young man, his ideas might bring something better to light. Or Preston; It is the motion we have to deal with, Your Worship. I propose we get a clock here. The motion was then put and carried. Messrs Dickinson and Monday’s application to work ground up Bush Creek was held over, until reported on by His Worship and Crs Preston and Reid, a committee appointed for that purpose. Accounts to the amount of £2O odd were passed for payment. The Dayman’s report was read and adopted. On the motion of Cr Preston and Reid it was decided that the dog registration fee for the current year be ss, with Constable Bowman as collector. Or Preston : T must draw the Coum cil’s attention to our present financial state. We are very much behind. A list of defaulting ratepayers was then tabled. Cr Preston : There is too much time being wasted. Your Worship, You must facn.it, “ Buts ” and “mights” will not do. It was resolved that all rates in arrears, previous to June, 189.'), be sued for at the next Court on the 12th February, and the accounts be presented once more for the last time.
