A damaged Gotha that was returning from a raid on London was forced to descend at Sneek in Friesland. It certainly chose an appropriate place.
Word has been received that Mr J. C. Eimmer, who went to England some three years ago and took a position in one of the munition works, is returning to Helensville shortly.
The question is being asked — Has our Town Board come into a legacy, or has someone kindly given them a load of scoria ? Anyhow, they have made a start to fill-in the big wash-out in the footpath in Commercial Road.
The lumpers of Melbourne are now refusing to handle foodstuffs for export unless intended for war purposes. They don't like it, and they won't lump it. — London Opinion.
Lionel Barrymore's latest hit is in *' The Upheaval," a photodrama based on the story by Lawrence McClosky. Great subjects are handled in a great way, giving a powerful presentation of modern politics, and the struggle between graft and reform. This fine drama will be included on the first-class programme to be screened on Saturday evening next at the Star Theatre
Before the war, in Great Britain an income of £500 paid a tax of £13; now it pays £51. An income of £1000 before the war paid £38 ; now it pays £139. A £5000 income before the war paid £292; now it pays £1502. A £100,000 income before the war paid £12,458; now it pays £47,129.
Nearly all the Ministers of the British War Cabinet are men of the people. Lord Milner's title only goes back to 1901, and nobody can pretend that Lord Curzon is of the old nobility. Of all the present Ministerial crowd in Britain, these two only ever went to a university. The Prime Minister was brought up by a village cobbler in Wales. r*ir Bonar Law's father was a Canadian parson. Others have worked through shop and factory.
The screen's most charming personality, Mary Miles Minter, adds to her great reputation in the bright, clever, dramatic story ' Dulcie's Adventure," which will be shown at the Star Theatre on Wednesday evening next. Winsome Mary is a lonely little girl from down South, who doesn't care that she is an aristocrat, and loves the grocer's boy. Her aunts are ambitious and force her to marry for wealth, but a train of dramatic surprises save the girl's happiness. Miss M. Robinson, of Woodhill, who, it will be remembered, conducted a Red Cross stall (for the sale of Indian basketry) at the recent Efelensville Show, reports that all the baskets were sold,, and she has received the following letter from Mr C. F. Bickford, Red Cross Organiser : —v Your letter of 31st ult. duly to hand, with enclosed £1 16s, being the proceeds of sale ot Indian basketry, for the Red Gross Fund, Will you please aocept my sincere thanks for your donation, and 1 can assure you your aotion is greatly appreciated.
