/PICNIC AND SPORTS
There was a record attendance at the picnic and sports held on New Year's Day, the gate-money accounting for between 300 and 400 people. The rain which fel. in the afternoon curtailed several of the events, nevertheless a verypleasant day was spent, and there , was keen competition"' for the various events mentioned below. • Boys' Race, 14 years or overwon by W, McLean. Girls' Race, 14 or over—F. McLean. The Apple Bobbing, which afforded great amusement for all present, was won by Mr Murray, with V. Aitkenhead a very close second. Boys' Race, 10 to 14 years— G. Smith. ~.„_ GirlsV Kacer 10 to 14 years— J. Mills. Boys' Race, under 10 years— Kenny Drinnan. Girls' Race, under 10 yearsIvy Stevens. The High Jump HandicapAfter a a very close contest E. ' Saunders was awarded first prize, ' the height jumped beingjlft 6ir£ which considering the roughness of the ground was very fair indeed. ' Thread the Needle Race (on horseback)— This afforded great amusement and keen competition v The winners were Mr W. Gardener and Mrs H. Hooper. "'- Tilting the Ring (on horseback) —W. McLean 1, V. Aitkenhead Z. Relay Race—Large entries-^ Winning team: Sergt. E. Shanks, Privates G. Shanks and R. Osbaldiston, who were on final leave. There was also a special display. Best Collection of Vegatables C. Jones 1, H. Mills 2. Best 10 Potatoes—C. Jones 1 A. Osbaldiston 2. The Victor la Dorum, o r points prize, was won by W, McLean, who scored highest number of points. The net proceeds, for the day Z*!? r,aP Vl oximMy £20 > the Y.M.C.Athus benefiting to the extent of £10, and the KPC Painting Fund £10. The Church Committee wish to thank all who helped to makeithe day a'success, and hope to hold a picnic and sports again next year, and give even better amusement and better prizes. SOCIAL EVENING A record crowd assembed in . the Kaukapakapa Hall on Wednesday evening, 2nd inst., to welcome home a returned soldier Sergt. C. Scott, and bid farewell ' and God speed ' to the followine -Sergt. E. Shanks, Privates G. Shanks, H. Stevens, R. Osbaldiston, A. Dormer, and G. Ketterer. The speaker, Mr Dye, also had the pleasure of extending a welcome to Kaukapakapa of another returned soldier, Sergt. Todd, who together with Sergt. Scott, has been invalided home, During i the evening Mr Dye made a vefySJ appropriate speech, which he de- W clared to be a double-barrene4^fs one, embracing as it did a wel- • come on the one hand and a farewell on the other ; the farewell he considered to be a regular magazine as was to seven of our boys The evening passed off quickly with the singing mf ,nv times, of "For they freJoK Good Fellows," hip'nipTurray^ ■ ing, and several musical items were rendered, also recitations while games and dancing were indulged in with zest. The National Anthem and " AulH Lang Syne " were heartily sun^
