o PLAYED CROQUET, TENNIS AND CRICKET. Lord Sanderson died suddenly in 'London recently, aged 70. Although blind from birth, he was for many years Principal of Ruskin College, Oxford. liis home was at Cromer. Lord Sanderson was lecturer and tutor in economics at Ruskin College in 1907, and Principal from 1916 to 1925. He was raised to the peerage in 1930, when Mr. Ramsay MacDonald was Prime Minister in the 1929-31 Labour Administration. In May, 1936, he announced his resignation as a representative of the Labour peers on the Executive of the Parliamentary Labour Party, owing to his opposition to the party’s foreign policy. Lord Sanderson was a direct descendant of Robert Sanderson, Bishop of Lincoln in Charles IPs reign, who wrote the preface to the Book of Common Prayer. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. Thomas Sanderson Furniss, of Higham House, Stratford St. Mary, Suffolk, and was educated privately and at Hertford College, Oxford. Despite his affliction, he learned to play croquet, tennis, and even cricket.
He married, in 1902, Averil Dorothy, only daughter of the late H. F. Nicholl, of Bear Place, Twyford, Berks. There are no children -and the title becomes extinct.
