OLD BOYS' CRICKET CLUB

ANNUAL SMOKO. MR. J. DINSDALE FAREWELLED. At the annual smoko of the Old Boys' Cricket Club, held in Dinsdale's Rooms on Saturday evening, opportunity was take to farewell the captain of the Colts' team, Mr. J. Dinsdale, who is to sail for England shortly to join the Royal Air Force. Mr. J. Stansfield, president of the Club, was in the chair, and representatives were present from Mokauiti, Pio Pio, Aria, Waitanguru, Kiwis, Colts, Old Boys, and the various Lodge teams.

In proposing the toast of the patroness, Mrs. Mostyn Jones, who attended the smoko for a short time, Mr. R. Seccombe thanked Mrs. Mostyn Jones for the keen interest displayed in cricket during many years, and for her help to the Colts' team and to the Maniapoto Association. Mr. E. M. Innes Jones, on behalf of his mother, thanked Mr. Seccombe for his remarks and for the manner in which the toast had been honoured. Mrs. Mostyn Jones was keen on cricket and was always willing to help the sport in any way possible. As Mrs. Mostyn Jones retired she was accorded musical honours.

The toast of the "Old Boys' Cricket Ciub" was proposed by Mr. McKenzie, captain of the Kiwi Club, who stated that the Old Boys' Club had helped cricket in Te Kuiti considerably by entering two teams in the competition. Mr. J. Stansfield responded. Mr. Dodworth, in proposing the toast of the "Maniapoto Cricket Association," complimented the Association on the improved standard of play during the season. In his response, the president of the Association, Mr. Montgomery, urged more players to spend some of their spare time in keeping the wicket in order, instead of leaving it to one or two as at present. Without a good wicket there could not be a high standard of cricket in Te Kuiti.

"His departure is going to mean a big loss to cricket and other sporting activities of the town," said Mr. J. Hebden, in proposing the toast of the guest of the evening, Mr. J. S. Dinsdale, and wishing him the best of luck in England. Mr. Hebden then called on the president, Mr. Stansfield, to present a travelling rug to Mr. Dinsdale, with the good wishes of the cricketers and supporters of the district.

•Messrs. McLaughlan, D. Haire, McKenzie, H. E. Martin, Kirk, Glasgow, and G. Elliott also paid tributes to Mr. Dinsdale, and while regretting his departure, wished him the best of luck in the future.

Mr. Dinsdale suitably replied, thanking those present for their gift and the good wishes extended to him. He was looking forward to going to England, but in many ways regretted leaving Te Kuiti.

After the toast of "Kindred Sports" had been proposed by Mr. N. B. Lusk and replied to by Mr. Chatwin, Mr. Stansfield called on Mr. Montgomery, president of the Maniapoto Association, to present the Hamill Sheikl and Cotter Cup to the captain of the Colts' team, Mr. Dinsdale. In making the presentation of the trophies Mr. Montgomery congratulated the Club on its successes, and said that while it was most unusual for one team to win -both competitions in a season, the Colts deserved their wins as they were the only team which practised regularly throughout the season. During the evening items were given by Messrs. A. Lawrence (piano), R. Bishop (song), A. B. Cotter (song) McLaughlan (song), D. Haire (song), while Messrs. Waite (Mokauiti), Montgomery, Dinsdale, Stansfield and Hebden told humorous stories.
