SETTLERS' ASSOCIATION

MEETING OF PIO PIO EXECUTIVE. The monthly meeting of the executive of the Pio Pio Settlers' Association was held on the 2nd instant. Settlers from Mangakowhai Road attended and sought the assistance of the Association in getting willows cleared from the Mangakowhai stream. They stated that they had made contributions towards the Mokau scheme under the impression that this scheme was to be cleared also, but now found this was not the case. It was decided to ask the Waitomo County Council to discuss this matter with the engineer in charge of the Mokau scheme, to see if it was possible to get the Mangakowhai cleared also - while the men and hauler were on the spot. The secretary was also instructed to write to the Power Board and Post and Telegraph Department asking them to instruct their linesmen to remove any willow branches which may fall into streams or drains when they are lopping trees near the lines, as if left, these are liable to take root and soon cause a serious block. It was decided to apply to the Waitomo County Council for the formation of a footpath between the township and the school. This piece of road is used daily by most of the children, and members considered it was dangerous for them to have to use the traffic road. A small formation at the side with a rubbled surface was all that was necessary. As a result of the Association's representations an extra outward mail now leaves Pio Pio at 5 p.m. The secretary was instructed to write to the Postmaster in Te Kuiti thanking him for his assistance in this matter. It was resolved to ask the Automobile Association (Auckland) to reerect the speed limit notices at the approaches to the township, as those previously erected had either been knocked over or destroyed.
