BOROUGH WORKS

ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following report for the m'o'nth of October was submitted by the Borough Engineer, Mr. B. J. Drake, to the meeting of the Borough Council last evening. Streets Maintenance. Portion of Mangarin Road has been renovated with chips and shingle, Waitete Road with shingle, and Queen Street, Seddon Street, the Esplanade, Tawa Street and Carroll Street with chips. Water. —Several new water service connections have been installed during the month. Owing to damage caused through the main being carried away, a certain amount of assistance has been carried out by the staff in renovating a portion of the Waitomo County Council road in the Waitete Valley. No further subsidences have occurred and with the advent of dry weather, no more slips should occur. As an aid in holding the slip area, willows have been extensively planted. Abattoir.—Minor repairs to the abattoir yards have been carried out during the month. Reservoir. — The work of investigating the leak at the reservoir has been commenced, but owing to unfavourable weather conditions has had to be suspended for the time being. The whole of the initial work has been completed and as soon as the weather breaks the tunnelling will be proceeded with. Satisfactory labour has been obtained. Carroll Street-Tawhana Street Sewer.—Negotiations with the Railway Department are being carried out in order to expedite the installation of th CarrollStreet-Tawhana Street sewer. Pending the result of these necessary to proceed with the work weather is now due, it has been found ling of streets is being proceeded at the reservoir.

Street Metalling and Permanent Surfacing.—A comprehensive report on the general resurfacing and metalling of streets is being prc'oeeded with. Considerable data regarding crushers, quarrying costs, suitable metal, etc., is still being obtained and this report will be tabled at the next meeting of the Council.
