A considerable amount of New Zealand produce is imported by merchants in Singapore, and is very welcome there, according to Captain A. Snow, who has been engaged in seafaring work, mainly as a pilot, in the Straits Settlements, for about 50 years, and is now visiting Christchurch in the course of a tour of New Zealand. He stated in an interview that New Zealand butter, cheese, dried milk, mutton and lamb are largely used, and are highly prized. There were 7000 to 8000 Europeans in Singapore, he said, out of a total population of half a million. The majority were Chinese, some* of whom were very wealthy. Votes in the general election were cast on Friday morning by a number of Auckland electors who left later by the Wanganella for Sydney. The exercise of the franchise i'n this way is made possible by the postal voting system, which permits a postal vote, after the necessary formalities, to be cast at any time after the issue of the election writ and prior to the closing of the poll. The writ for the pending election was issued on November 4 and the poll will be held on November 27.
