RURAL RATES SUBSIDY
EXTENSION SUGGESTED. PLEA FOR URBAN AREAS. A suggestion that the 12 i per cent, subsidy on rural rates should be extended to benefit urban ratepayers was made by Mr. A. Harris (Government Waitemata) during the second reading debate on the Finance Bill in the House of Representatives on Thursday. The farmer had had a hard time, Mr. Harris said, and no one begrudged him any help the Government was able to give. At the same time , ratepayers in boroughs and cities were having an equally difficult experience. Mr. Harris pointed out that during the past year or so most of the boroughs and cities had been revalued, and although valuations bad been reduced, the rates had increased in very many cases. That was the experience in the boroughs with which he was associated. He did not know what amount would be required to extend the benefit of the subsidy to boroughs and cities, but he thought it should be done if it was at all possible.
