MAORI CAUGHT IN SANCTUARY.
SMALL FINE INFLICTED.
Charges of.taking a shotgun into a game Sanctuary, obstructing _ a ranger in the execution of his duties, and that, being in possession of game, he failed to produce a license, were preferred against a Maori, James Anderson, in the Magistrate's Court before Mr. Hewitt, S.M., this mornC. W. Hetet, a ranger appointed by the Auckland Acclimatisation Society, said that on May 28 he heard two shots fired in the Viaduct reserve. Witness intercepted J. Dinsdale and drove in the latter's car until they met the accused coming out of a paddock, which was included in the sanctuary. The defendant pulled a duck out of his pocket and then refused to give up either the bird or the gun and failed to produce a license. He said Hetet, who was his cousin, had better take his coat off, but witness told him he had not come to fight. The witness said even if the defendant had a shooting license he would have been debarred from shooting in a sanctuary. J. Dinsdale said Anderson adopted a threatening attitude to Hetet. Although he pleaded guilty the defendant had nothing to say. The Magistrate fined him 20s and costs, and ranger expenses.
