RUGBY FOOTBALL
SEVEN A SIDE TOURNAMENT. WIN FOR PIO PIO. Closely contested football was witnessed at Pio Pio on Saturday when the seven-a-side tournament for the Boddy Shield was held. Four teams entered for the competition, Pio Pio A emerging the winners after defeating Waitete in the first round and Te Kuiti in the final, the issue in both these games remaining in doubt until the call of time. Waitete in the first half actually ran up eight points against Pio Pio A before that team registered, but the Pio Pio team carried on piling up the points and by time had raised its score to 11. . The game between Te Kuiti and Pio Pio B resulted in a fairly easy win for the former team, the score being Te Kuiti 16, Pio' Pio B nil. A great struggle ensued in the final. Pio Pio A won by 9 points to 8, Te Kuiti obtained a try on the tick of time right under the posts, but the rules of seven-a-side football, which state that the game must stop immediately time is up, precluded them from taking the kick.
After the game Mr. R. Boddy, the donor, presented the shield to the Pio Pio A team, and three cheers called for him were given full heartily.
Season Closes Next Saturday
Next Saturday will see the end of the football season in the Maniapoto Sub-Union, and two good senior games should result on Rugby Park. The Pio Pio team, as winners of the Championship Banner, will for the second time be called upon to defend the Hetet Memorial Shield. Athletic, the Taumarunui champion team, will be the challenger. The final of the Pukeweka knockout competition should also provide a keen game, Hangatiki and Waitanguru being the teams.
Junior Trophies.
Waitete- juniors turned the tables on Mangaotaki, defeating them by 6 points to 5 after a keen and fast game on Rugby Park last Saturday for the Courtney-Boult Cup. Junior trophies this year have been well distributed. United (Mangapehi) holds the 1935 junior chamship, Waitete the Courtney-Boult and the Farmers' Cup, and Mangaotaki the Searancke Memorial Shield.
