NARROW ESCAPE

YOUNG BOY IN RIVER.

TIMELY RESCUE EFFECTED. A Primer 1 pupil of the local school, Noel Jeffcott, had a very narrow escape from drowning yesterday afternoon. He slipped into the river and was almost unconscious when rescued by a teacher, Miss M. Hunn. Artificial respiration soon had effect, however, and he was removed to hospital after he rallied. Where he slipped in at about 2 p.m. was just opposite the playground, he having been playing near the bank, an area from which the younger children are precluded. In spite of the slightly flooded river the water would probably not be over his head, but the shock resulted in his being exhausted when Miss Hunn was attracted to the scene. Without wasting time she plunged into the river and drew the young boy, now in a semi-conscious condition, to the bank. Artificial respiration was applied by one of the teachers, and then he was conveyed by car to the hospital. The young boy recovered rapidly from his experience.
