NEW ZEALAND BUTTER

DANISH COMPETITION. LETTERS IN THE "GROCER." In the ''Grocer" of Februarv 3, * Mr. Erik Schacke, writing under the heading "The Butter Muddle and Denmark," quotes figures which purport to compare the value of Great Britain's export trade to Denmark with that to New Zealand. As he takes only the period of nine months (January to September) of 1933, he is able to make Denmark's trade appear much more favourable than if he worked out his figures over a longer and more normal period. Mr. H. E. Davis, London manager of the New Zealand Dairy Produce Board, in a letter to the current issue of the "Grocer," gives figures which are more enlightening. He says:— "Here are the actual exports of produce and manufactures from Great Britain to New Zealand and Denmark during the last six years, , for which complete Board of Trade

"In six years, therefore, New Zealand, with little more than one-third of Denmark's population, has purchased over £40.,000,000 more goods : from Great Britain. "The average purchases of British goods per head of population of the : two countries are even more striking. They are:— !

New Zealand's purchases, as well as the produce she sells in Great Britain, are carried in British ships, built in British shipyards, manned and maintained by British labour. At the present moment there are no less than 100,000 tons of new shipping being built in Great Britain, primarily for the New Zealand trad:. "On any comparison of the purchases of British goods between New Zealand and any foreign country, the extraordinarily favourable light in which New Zealand appears may seem at first si"-ht to be remarkable, but closer examination reveals the British origin of 99 per cent, of our population who have carried with them a very real desire to "Buy British.' "

Depreciated Currency.

Another letter, originally in the "Manchester Daily Dispatch," is republished in the "Grocer." In this the writer says:—

"New Zealand is trading under artificial conditions, and has imposed a 25 per cent, tariff by depreciating her currency to this extent against our imports. The New Zealand Government was not warranted in depreciating the currency under the Ottawa Agreement, and is losing very heavily in withdrawals from London credits."

Still another correspondent (Mr. John Ashley, F.G.1.) writes to the "Grocer" from Manchester. He says:—

"I would like through your paper to congratulate the grocers of Manchester and Selford on their enthusiasm in this week's window shows of New Zealand butter and cheese. The lavish and artistic way in which they have risen to the occasion has been something of an eye-opener, and has attracted widespread interest. As the song* says, "It's the Talk of the Town.' It would not be fair for me to single out any particular display; indeed, I am thinking the judges will have something to do in arriving at their verdict, the standard of excellence is so high. I am told there were 321 entries—a record number —in the competition held by the New Zealand Dairy Produce Board for the best window display."
