TANGITU

(Own Correspondent.) The Mapiu Cycle Club held its first dance on Saturday, 19th inst., in the Tangitu Hall. The clerk of the weather seemed to have had a deliberate set on the club, the weather being atrocious. It was surprising to see the number in attendance in face of these bad conditions, and it can be safely said that all were well paid for having braved the elements. The dance was held for the purpose of augmenting the club's funds. Excellent music was supplied by Mr. E. Whitten at the piano, Mr. W. Devereux, violin, and Messrs. Kyle brothers, banjo and banjo-mandolin. All gave of their best, but it could be readily recognised that the vim and splendid leadership of the piano demanded the best of all other players. The M.C. for the evening was Mr. W. Schou, secretary of the club, and this is the first occasion that we have seen Mr. Schou operate in this capacity. The floor was in tip-top order; no pains seemed to have been spared by the club members to binng about this most desired condition. The supper provided was dainty and good, and all seemed to be satisfied. It can be emphasised that it was a most enjoyable dance, although the attendance was not as it should have been. Mr. E. Whitten's singing of the old song, "When Your Hair Has Turned to Silver," drew an encore. Mr. W. Page rendered the Irish Jig with some humorous patter-songs, in a splendid manner, the audience being fully appreciative of Mr. Page's item and the accompaniment by Mr. Whitten. Winners of the balloon dance were Miss K. Amrein and Mr. J. Morrissen. Winners of the Monte Carlo were Mrs. A. Andrew and Mr. N. Gernhoefer. The extras played by Mrs. J. Brake were of a very high standard, and the dancers' enjoyment of same could be seen in their demand for more. Dancing continued into the early hours of the morning. The Mapiu school dance on the 3rd of December, also the Tangitu school dance on the 10th, are being looked forward to with keen anticipation of two good functions, Mr. Whitten being engaged as musician for the latter.
