PETROL TAX
TOTAL OF £1,677,520. MAIN HIGHWAYS FUND. An analysis of the yield and distribution of the motor-spirits taxation is given in the annual report of the Transport Department, which was presented to the House of Representatives on Thursday. The gross yield for the year ended 31st March last was £1,817,890, and the refunds amounted to £140,370, leaving a net tax of £1,677,520. The net yields for the last five years are as follows: 1928 143,516* 1929 . 802,232 1930 961,097 1931 1,314,450 f 1932 1,677,520$ Total, since inception of tax £4,899,625 *Part year only, flncrease from 4d to 6d per gallon as from 22nd July, 1930. flncrease from 6d to 8d per gallon as from 7th October, 1931. "There has been an increase in the applications for refunds since the tax was increased to Bd," states the report. "There are two main reasons for this—firstly, the financial stringency due to the prevailing depression, and, secondly, the increase in the tax, which has now made it worth while for people to claim refunds that they did not worry about when the tax was 6d." The distribution of the net yield of the petrol tax for the year ended 31st March last was as follows:
Main Highways Board . . 1,231,202 Boroughs (pop. of 6000 and over) 107,061 Consolidated Fund . . . . 321,685 Commision to Customs Department 17,572 Total £1,677,520 After the Ist August, 1930, the proportion of petrol-tax paid to borouehs with populations of 6000 and over was reduced from 8 cent to 51 per cent., but the 8 per cent, was reinstated as from Ist April, 1931.
