Big Ben, a giant Russian boarhound, which is on exhibition at A. and P. shows in the South Island, is a de* scendant of the giant dogs that were attached to the mountain gun section of the Russian army. They were used to pull mountain guns over hills and through forests where horses could not go. Big Ben is bigger than a pony, and is spotted like a leopard, being as docile as a lamb. Any child coming to see him can have a free ride. Big Ben caused a sensation when he arrived at Wellington by theMaunganui from Sydney, for when box came out of the ship's hold to be landed on the wharf, all the onlookers expected to see a racehorse land, but to the surprise of everyone out walked Ben, the dog.
