RAGWORT TREATMENT
USE OF UNEMPLOYED. APPLICATION TO COUNTY COUNCIL. Regarding the use of unemployed in connection with treatment of ragwort, the Waitomo County Council has received advice from the Auckland representative of the Unemployment Board on the points submitted from the last Council meeting. Permission has been given to use the men in the various camps. These services will not be confined to the settlers concerned only, but will be available to adjoining farmers. Unfortunately the men employed under the ordinary No. 5 scheme cjinnot be engaged on a proper continuous basis. They are still subject to the ration of work and monetary allocation. Those requiring men for treatment of ragwort, either from camps or from the ranks of ordinary unemployed, must make application to the County office in writing, stating the number of men required and for how many days each. They will then be required to pay a small contribution towards cost of insurance, and in the case of the men from the camps an additional Is per day per man towards the Council’s outlay in establishing the camps. The minimum amount for insurance is Is. For instance, a person requiring two men for eight days each will require to pay approximately 2s Gel for insurance, and, in the case of men from camp, another 16s, making 18s 6cl in all. The settlers must supply all materials and any cost of transport. As the ragwort season is getting on settlers desiring to take advantage of the unemployed labour should make early application, as a week’s notice is required in the case of men on the ordinary No. 5 scheme.
