WAIMIHA.
(Own Correspondent.) The Waimiha Picture Palace was specially decorated on Saturday evening, sth inst., when the Waimiha Basketball Club held its Halloween dance. The decorations comprised witches, black cats, and owls. Balloons and streamers and a great variety of beautiful flowers completed a striking and effective scheme of decorations. Lamps shaded with pumpkins, etc., cast a subdued radiance over all. The clerk of the weather seemed determined not to allow the weather conditions to favour the Club's efforts, but there are brave hearts in this district and the building was taxed to its fullest capacity. The bus engaged for bringing patrons from the Tangitu and inland district suffered a breakdown, and although another was dispatched as soon as the news came in, it is regretted that it was too late, the prospective passengers having returned home. The "Melody Boys" orchestra, from Taumarunui, had been engaged for the occasion, and very enjoyable music was rendered by them during the evening. Splendid extras were played by Miss R. Needham and Mr. Stevens. Mrs. Natali and Miss Laing, who acted as M.C.'s for the evening proved that they fully understood the duties of their onerous position. Some splendid enjoyment was obtained from the novetly dances of the evening: Thread-the-needle dance, won by Mrs. Larking and Mr. Fenton; "Balloon Danec," won by the previously mentioned pair; Monte Carlo, won by Miss Dawn Broyd and Mr. Brien; in the Statue Dance Mrs. Adams and partner were the winners. The embroidered cushion was won by Miss P. Parkes. Splendid vocal items were rendered by Mr. Tapu. The officers and committee of the Basketball Club are worthy _of the greatest praise for the splendid character of the function presented.
A meeting of the district settlers and residents of Waimiha was held in the Waimiha Picture Palace, called for the purpose of considering the advisability of forming an Athletic Sports Club at Waimiha. There was not a very large crowd present, though keen on something being done in the direction mooted. After some lengthy discussion relative to the matter 'of a suitable ground being available near Waimiha on which to hold sports, it was resolved that a deputation be formed to look into this matter, comprised of Messrs. D. Jones (Native Settlement), W. Stafford, H. Broyd, G. Speers, J. W. Collins, J. K. Natali and L. J. Innes. It was decided that a further meeting be called for Tuesday, 15th inst. in the Waimiha Picture Palace at 7.30 p.m., and from all evidence a large crowd can be expected to attend, when the matter of whether a club will be formed or not will be decided upon. The cut made by the Unemployment Board of about 20 per cent, in this week's allocation for the relief workers of this district, has caused bitter feeling to prevail at the Board's action, and how it is expected for these unfortunate people to get both ends to meet for mere existence is a problem which the Board should be called upon to solve.
