PURCHASE OF LAND

ACQUISITION BY STATE. EIGHT FARMING PROPERTIES. A total of 201 estates was offered to the Government last year under the Land for Settlement Act, 1925, and eight farming properties were purchased, according to a report tabled in the House on Wednesday. The total area acquired was 4815 acres and the amount paid out was £62,525. Included in the purchases were seven properties totalling 2772 acres acquired on behalf of approved applicants under the Land Laws Amendment Act, 1928. Owing to low wool and lamb prices it has not been practicable to purchase purely grazing lands which, on subdivision, could be disposed of at prices enabling settlers successfully to occupy their holdings. However, when opportunity offers, it is hoped it will be possible to arrange for the purchase of some suitable grazing land.

The following lands were purchased in the Auckland Province during the year ended March 31 last:—ll42 acres, Tauraroa settlement, from Mr. M. J. O'Shea, Whangarei, for £5592; 2004 acres, Wairakau settlement, from the McNicol family, Te Aroha, for £29,309; 177 acres, Te Poi settlement, from E. J. Brown, Okoroire, for £4251; 294 acres, Hannon settlement, from the estate of Mrs. I. Hannon, Cambridge, for £4631; 308 acres, Norwegians settlement, from the estate of R. Reynolds, Cambridge, for £4051.
