NO RATES REMISSION
POSITION IN THE COUNTIES. The 121/2 per cent, rebate on county rate will not be provided for by the Government this year, owing to the difficulty of finance, said the Minister of Public Works, Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, in reply to a question by Mr. J. Linklater (Govt., Manawatu) in the House on Wednesday. Mr. Linklater said the great majority of ratepayers in counties throughout New Zealand were farmers. They found it difficult to meet their liabilities, and relief would be much appreciated. "The per cent, rebate on county rates was made possible last year by the "utilisation of funds then in the hands of the Main Highways Board," Mr. Coates said. "There being no other similar reserve from which to draw this year, it would not be possible to provide similar relief to county ratepayers unless additional taxation was levied on the community generally. It is not proposed to impose such further taxation."
